Aggies Fall to Wayland Baptist

Box Score Plainview, Texas—The OPSU Baseball team hit the road en-route to Laredo, Texas stopping off in Plainview for a single game against Wayland Baptist University Wednesday evening where the Pioneers put an early end to the scheduled nine innings with a 15-1 win over the Aggies.

Nicolas Zieniuk hit the only RBI for the Aggies in the first inning bringing in Lucas Ogaz from second base for the first run of the game. The Pioneers then went on to score four runs off back-to-back homers, a double and a single to close out the first. Both teams were held scoreless on almost perfect pitching in the second inning. Freshman Riley Crews got his first start on the mound for OPSU and was put to the test for 2.1 innings; Wayland got by with seven hits for five runs with Crews serving one strikeout, two fly-outs and four ground-outs.

With three Pioneers on base and one out in the bottom of the third, Patrick Gonzales entered for Crews and sent the next two batters back to the dugout with a fly out and one strikeout; Wayland drove in one run on two hits and went up 5-1 after three innings. Gonzales also stayed in 2.1 innings and threw two strikeouts, three fly-outs and two ground-outs, giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits.

Wayland's starting pitcher Jose Urena lasted 5.2 innings allowing five hits and one run on his watch. The Pioneer bats went to work in the bottom of the fifth bringing in six runs on seven hits that included another Wayland homer. Felipe Beltran came in to relieve Gonzales for OPSU with two outs in the bottom of the fifth after three Pioneers crossed home plate. Beltran gave up two RBI on three hits before throwing a line-out to close the inning.

B.J. Henry took the mound with the Aggies down 1-13 going into the sixth. The Aggies managed two hits in the closing two innings while Henry held the Pioneers to one hit, but they were able to bring in two runs on a ground out to seal the 14-run victory. Crews took the loss for OPSU while Urena earned his second win of the season for WBU.

The Aggies look to improve their Heartland record of 2-7 as they step back in to conference play this weekend. Good luck and safe travels as they continue on to Laredo to take on Texas A&M-International University March 27-28.
