Big Home-Opener for OPSU Football

Goodwell, Okla.—After two long road trips the Aggies are eager to play in front of a home crowd this Saturday, Sept. 19 at Carl Wooten Field; kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

The team will take on Langston University which has proved through the years to be a competitive inter-state rivalry. The Lions started off their season ranked No. 18 nationally in the NAIA polls and currently sit 1-1 on the season. Langston earned their first win last week against Bethany College with a strong rushing attack that saw running back Kievon Jackson pound the ground for 190 yards and two touchdowns. The Lion defense put up six sacks in the game and will be a force to reckon with on Saturday.

The Aggies will meet with dual-purpose this week as they are looking for not only their first win of the season, but their first win over Langston since 2004 when the Aggies beat the Lions in Langston 31-14. With junior transfer Shane Truelove ready to take the reins at quarterback, OPSU will certainly stand a strong chance of doing just that. The offensive line will need to step up their protection to hold off a strong Langston front giving OPSU equal threats in the air and on the ground with two skilled running backs, Chris McClendon and Rod Moore. Defensively the Aggies will look to contain the running game and attack the pass; Langston's Mark Wright, Jr. can be an effective weapon at quarterback.

Coach Russell Gaskamp has firm expectations for this week's competition, "Let's be honest…this is a back-against-the-wall kind of game. We have not gotten the job done. I have a much higher expectation of our team and our kids understand this. Langston is our longest running rival and this is the kind of game you play college football for. These two teams don't like each other and I expect it to be a physical game. Both teams will be ready to go."

Ready for a great home crowd Gaskamp added, "We are excited to finally be playing at home and we need our OPSU Football community to come out and be rowdy and support their Aggies."

Saturday's game is sponsored by Chrysler Corner in Liberal and it will be Military, Law Enforcement and First Responders Appreciation Day. Free t-shirts will be given out at the gates while supplies last with a camo theme to commemorate the event. Prior to the game the OPSU HALO club will recognize Hispanic student-athletes in honor of Hispanic Heritage month which kicked off this week.

A special performance from the Little Aggies Cheerleaders will provide great halftime entertainment; the Little Aggies Cheer Camp will take place Saturday morning in the Noble Activity Center from 9am-12:30pm with t-shirts and lunch provided.

The forecast calls for great weather and plenty of fun for Aggie fans of all ages! Come cheer the team on to victory and WEAR RED, GET ROWDY and REV IT UP at Carl Wooten Field!
