Goodwell, Okla.—Who doesn't enjoy crisp fall weather, spicy chili and hard-hitting football? The Aggie Nation has been preparing for a special day for the seniors at Carl Wooten Field both inside and outside of No Man's Land Stadium. This Saturday, Nov. 12 Panhandle State will host the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas for a 1 p.m. kickoff on the field, and a pre-game chili cook-off and tailgate off the field.
Tailgating opens at 10:30 a.m. east of the stadium and the Tenth Annual Chili Cook-off will take place all around the tailgate area. Judging begins at 11 a.m. and tasting is free! The winners will be announced during halftime of the football game.
The (2-8) Aggies will have their hands full on-field with a tough (7-3) Javelina team coming to town. After five straight wins, Kingsville will look to continue their streak and playoff hopes for the near future. However, they will have to get past a well-inspired Aggie squad on the road. Head coach
Russell Gaskamp has been expecting a very physical contest as he and his team head into their last game. "Kingsville is the most physical team we have played all year. To have any chance we will have to stop the run first, which has been a struggle for us this season." The Javelinas lead the conference in scoring with 383 total points and over 50 touchdowns. After giving up 53 points last week, the Aggies will no doubt have plans for a more aggressive rebound. Coach Gaskamp also understands that the team must to be able to move the ball against a tricky Kingsville defense. "They are very multiple in their looks and a very heavy blitz group. If we become one dimensional on offense, we will be in for a long day. We have to get a hat on a hat in the run game and in our protection schemes."
This Saturday will also hold a great amount of emotion for the senior players. Going into his last college football game, senior quarterback
Shane Truelove shared his thoughts on the upcoming event. "It still hasn't really hit me yet, I'm still in disbelief. That being said, I feel we have put a good week of practice together and plan on doing whatever it takes to get the win." Despite the atmosphere a senior undergoes during his last week of college football, Truelove seems to be focused on how the offense needs to perform including himself. "It all comes down to doing our job every single play. Whether it's the offensive line understanding a blitz look by pre-snap alignment, receivers converting when they're supposed to, or me getting my eyes on safeties and not being fooled by safety rotation. It all comes down to execution."
Truelove will be sharing the spotlight this Saturday with fellow senior teammate
Allston Hadley. The offensive lineman will also be playing his final college football game. "My family will be in the stands watching me play, and I want to send my friends and teammates off with a victory before going into the offseason." Hadley will be a key component along with the rest of the offensive line in being able to exploit a dangerous defense. "Kingsville definitely likes to shake things up, but it can also hurt them. They do have a tendency to blitz often, but as long as the o-line follows their assignments, plays hard, and trusts in one another, we will do just fine and come out with a win."
Aggie fans will not want to miss this epic season finale with pre-game festivities offering fun for all ages. Fans are also reminded that the game will be recognizing the team's seniors as they compete for the last time at Panhandle State University. Saturday's game is hosted by Chrysler Corner in Liberal, Kan. and will also be a PBL-sponsored fundraiser day for the March of Dimes. Come out early and stay 'til the end; WEAR RED, GET ROWDY & REV IT UP for your Aggies!
