Box Score 2 Austin, Texas—One of the more scenic and entertaining trips for any Heartland Conference team happens as opponents visit the "Live Music Capital of the World" when traveling to compete against St. Edwards University. However the OPSU Men's and Women's basketball teams never quite felt the groove of the city as both fell in Saturday afternoon contests on Feb. 20 to the Hilltoppers. The Lady Aggies fell by the score of 63-74, and then the men's team followed with a 75-97 loss to SEU.
During the first game the Lady Aggies (2-22, 1-15 HC) were led
Brittany Alavinejad and
Kiera Waters who scored 18 and 15 points respectively.
Hannah Whitaker also played a fine game compiling ten points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks to earn her first double-double of the season. OPSU had a good day from the field shooting 47.1 percent overall and 41.7 percent from the three-point arc. However, the Aggies struggled with 24 turnovers leading to a 27-8 disadvantage in points off turnovers. In addition the ladies were beaten on the boards 48-33 giving the Hilltoppers 30 second-chance points. SEU (10-14, 8-8 HC) was led by the performance of Khiani Clark, scoring 25 points and taking in nine rebounds.
In the second game of the day the Aggie men (8-18, 1-17 HC) found themselves competing against a Toppers team that shot the ball at a 55.6 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from three-point range. SEU had five different players in double-digit scoring and played unselfish team basketball with 29 assists. OPSU was led in scoring by
Robert McCalley with 23 points.
Jake Regier was the only other Aggie in double digits with 11 total points. The Aggies found themselves trailing the Hilltoppers (17-9, 10-8 HC) by 18 points at halftime and never could get enough stops on the defensive end to climb back into the game.
Both teams are back on their home court for two home games this week, starting on Thursday, Feb. 25 versus Texas A&M International. Game times against the Dustdevils are at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Senior Recognition Day is Feb. 27, and it will be the last time fans can catch the Aggies at home as both teams compete against St. Mary's on Saturday. Come out and show your spirit and appreciation for the Aggie athletes.
