Challenging Conference Contests for Aggies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Goodwell, Okla.—Thursday night's Heartland Conference matchups ended in defeat for both Panhandle State basketball teams, as Lubbock Christian claimed a 78-48 victory over the Aggie women and the Chaps added a win over the men's team by a score of 86-70.

Darby Price earned her third double double of the season scoring 11 points and taking 10 rebounds for the Aggie women. Price added seven points on free throws (7-8), and also offered three assists and got one steal in the game. The Lady Chaps held a 27-point advantage (47-20) at the half, and had taken 20 points off turnovers from the Aggies. Panhandle finished with a 29.4 percent shooting average while LCU shot at over 49 percent for the game.

At the boards the Aggies were outmatched 45-29 with Price sharing the game-high in rebounds with LCU's Allison Szabo, each with ten. The game's leading scorer was Bobbi Chitsey who put up 14 points for the Lady Chaps. Other Aggies making an impact were Tiara Roberson with nine points, Addison Munsch and Johlicia Williams with eight points each and Shambri Kelso and Monti Regier who combined for five of the Aggies' eight steals.

Coach Charles Terry commented after the game, "Our kids play really hard and I am still very optimistic on our team. If we can start being more consistent in shooting, things will change for the better; we just need to start creating our own breaks."

The men's team got off to a good start and held a 16-14 lead at the 11-minute mark. The Chaps then went on a 7-0 shooting stretch and shifted the lead to a five-point (21-16) LCU advantage. By the end of the first half the Aggies found themselves down 41-30. Panhandle showed improvement in shooting after the break, but were unable to catch up with the Chaps. Both teams averaged 50.9 percent in shooting from the field, and each added points on ten successful three-point shots.

Sita Sesay scored a game-high of 17 points for the Aggies, followed by Jace Kerr and Jake Regier who put up 15 and 12 points respectively. The three Aggies combined for eight of the team's ten three-point shots in the game: Regier with four, Sesay had three and Kerr with one. Ridrell Holman was the leading scorer for LCU totaling 14 points for the Chaps. Sesay and Kerr also led the Aggies in rebounds with five apiece; LCU's Brennen Fowler held the game-high in rebounds with six.

Panhandle's head coach Jerry Olson gave credit to his opponent stating, "I tip my hat to LCU. They are really good and Coach Duncan does a great job. There is a reason they went to the second round of the NCAA D-II tournament last year." Olson spoke on his team's performance saying, "We played hard at times and played better defensively, but we have a hard time focusing on defense throughout. I felt our offense at times was better than it has been; we shared the ball well and had lots of assists." The Aggies totaled 20 assists in the game led by Riyadh Asad with four; LCU totaled 13 assists with Marcus Arrington offering the game-high with six.

The Aggies were scheduled to compete at home again on Saturday, Jan. 14, but both games have been cancelled due to impending icy weather. The women's game against Central Christian College has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m. and the men's games versus Dallas Baptist is still pending a new date. The Aggies will continue conference play on the road next week with games on Jan. 19 against St. Mary's in San Antonio and on Jan. 21 at Texas A&M-International in Laredo.
