Turnovers Take a Toll on Aggies at St. Mary’s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 San Antonio, Texas—The struggles through the conference stretch continue for Aggie Basketball as both teams took losses to St. Mary's Thursday evening. Panhandle's women dropped their matchup with the Rattlers 88-50, while a score of 101-48 shook down the men's team.

Currently sitting second in the Heartland Conference ranks with a 6-1 record within the league and the best overall record at 14-3, the Lady Rattlers owned all four periods of Saturday's contest. The Aggies put up their best efforts in the fourth quarter scoring 19 points and pulling 14 rebounds in the final ten minutes alone. For the game, Panhandle averaged 34 percent in shooting, 29.4 percent beyond the arc and 56.3 percent from the line; St. Mary's shot at 50 percent or better in all three categories, going 52.3 percent from the field, 50 percent at three-point range and 61.5 percent from the line.

The Aggies were led by the outstanding efforts of Darby Price who notched the game's only double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds; her fourth of the season. Price contributed in all facets adding two assists, and two steals to her stats. Monti Regier was the Aggie's second leading scorer totaling eight points, and Hannah Whitaker and Shaletha Mayberry helped out at the boards taking five and four rebounds respectively. For SMU LaBraile Fields led the game in scoring with 16 points, and Kiara Etheridge was the team's leading rebounder with seven. The two teams were closely matched at the boards as the Rattlers totaled 37 rebounds and the Aggies finished with 36. The Aggie women fall to a 1-14 overall record and own a 0-7 record within the Heartland.

Turnovers plagued both Panhandle performances, as the Aggies gave up a combined 61 points off turnovers to the Rattlers. The women's team suffered 13 steals on 28 turnovers for a loss of 36 points, while the Aggie men gave up 12 steals on 17 turnovers for 25 points. Assists were also short on the Aggie stat sheets with the women outshined 23-13 and the men only offering up nine dishes to the Rattler's 22 on the night.

In the men's matchup the Aggies found themselves down by a daunting 23-point deficit (46-23) at the half, with St. Mary's shooting at 44.1 percent and outmanning Panhandle 30-12 at the boards. After the break the Rattlers rallied to a 57.6 percent shooting average, while the Aggies dropped to 25 percent from the field. For the game the Aggies finished with a 26.0 percent shooting average, their lowest of the season; St. Mary's shot at a solid 50.7 percent and went 10-28 beyond the arc. Panhandle hit on 3-13 three-point attempts and both team averaged over 60 percent at the line.

Tevin Lytes was the only Aggie to land double-digits with ten points in the game; Jace Kerr and Riyadh Asad combined for 15 points with Kerr adding eight and Asad totaling seven. The game-high in scoring went to Yanni Wetzell of St. Mary's with 15 points; the Rattlers ended with six players totaling over ten points apiece. At the boards Lytes also led the Aggies with seven rebounds, followed by Malcolm Glanville with four. Glanville also took the team high in assists with four and got away with one of the Aggies' four steals. SMU's Will Ferguson held the game-high in rebounds with eight and also led the game in assists with seven. St. Mary's men improved to a 6-11 overall record with the win and hold a 4-4 standing in the Heartland Conference. Panhandle drops to 5-11 on the season and are 0-7 in conference play.

Both Aggie teams will continue conference action on the road, taking on Texas A&M-International in Laredo, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 21.
