Box Score 2 Austin, Texas—Panhandle State Basketball suffered two road losses to St. Edward's in Thursday night's double-header matchup. The Aggie women fell short in a contest that ended in favor of the Hilltoppers 66-51; a score of 99-56 dropped the men's team.
The women's team led at the boards (33-30) and shot well from the line (9-12). However, the Aggies gave up 21 points off turnovers, which aided in the loss. Averaging 40.4 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from three-point range, the bulk of Panhandle's scoring came from the Aggie bench. Junior forward Tiara Roberson put up a team-high of 12 points, followed by guard
Shaletha Mayberry who scored seven.
Morgan Latta added six points for the non-starters and went 2-2 beyond the arc, scoring two of the Aggies' four three-pointers. Panhandle's bench outscored SEU non-starters 31-20, and combined for eight of the team's 12 assists in the game;
Shambri Kelso offered a team-high of four assists.
Hannah Whitaker led the Aggies defensively totaling seven rebounds, all on defense; Roberson brought down six boards and took one steal on the Toppers. St. Edward's leading rebounder was Abby Hopper with eight. Hopper also led the game in assists with six and Lexi Fatheree held the game-high in scoring hauling in 18 points for the Toppers. The Aggie women fall to a 1-16 record on the season and are 0-9 within the Heartland Conference. St. Edward's currently leads the league with a 9-1 conference record and sit 13-6 for the season.
Panhandle's men struggled with ball protection and took a beating at the boards 48-29. The Hilltoppers totaled 23 points off turnovers and added 15 in second-chance points. St. Edwards shot well throughout the game averaging 50 percent from the field, while the Aggies maintained a 34.5 percent shooting average for the game. The Toppers also distributed the ball better, offering a team total of 26 assists to the Aggies' nine.
The game-high in scoring went to Ramir Burton who finished with 16 points for SEU; Burton also led his team in assists with a game-high of seven.
Riyadh Asad held the team-high for the Aggies with 14 points followed by
Jace Kerr who added 13. The Hilltoppers also owned game-high numbers in rebounds with Ethan Gilbert bringing down nine boards. For the Aggies Asad and
Jaedon Whitfield combined for 11 rebounds, taking five and six respectively. Panhandle State's men's team now site 5-13 overall and 0-9 in conference play. St. Edward's men are now tied for fourth in the Heartland after improving to 6-4 within the league; the Toppers hold a 14-9 season record.
Aggie Basketball is back on their home court next week with two Heartland Conference double-headers. Thursday, Feb. 2 the Aggies host UA-Fort Smith at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's matchups with Rogers State will start at 1 p.m. with the women and the men tipoff at three. The Panhandle men's team will also play a make-up game against Dallas Baptist this Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m.
