Box Score Goodwell, Okla.—In a make-up match from their previously scheduled contest on Jan. 14 which was postponed by an ice storm, the Dallas Baptist Patriots came to town and left with a 97-69 victory over the Aggies.
Jace Kerr got the Aggies off to a good start landing back-to-back layups on two consecutive steals off DBU turnovers. Kerr kept the Aggies in the lead (10-9) through the 14:54 mark adding a three-pointer, layup and free throw to the board. After a good jump shot by
Riyadh Asad, the Aggies shooting cooled off giving the Patriots the edge on a 12-3 stretch that put DBU up by ten midway through the first period.
Malcolm Glanville then turned up the heat with three layups, and Kerr and
Sita Sesay each connected on long-distance shots, pulling the Aggies within one point (28-27) with 7:37 left in the opening half. The Patriots brought the pressure and held the Aggies to 3-10 from the field for the remainder of the half. DBU owned a 42-35 lead at the break.
In the first two minutes of the second half, the Aggies were outscored 7-2 and had fallen 12 points behind their opponent (49-37).
Pierre Roddy helped bring his team back to life scoring on three layups and a three-point shot over a three-minute span;
Jaedon Whitfield hit a long bucket for three helping to edge Panhandle to a two-point deficit (56-54) with 12 minutes left on the clock. The game started getting away from the Aggies as five fouls sent DBU to the line to add eight points in free throws. Three turnovers also hurt the home team when three steals led to three threes for the Patriots. DBU finished off the Aggies by going 4-4 beyond the arc in the final minutes of the game.
DBU's strongest shooters were Julian Miranda and Amari Bryant who combined for ten of the teams 11 three-point shots made in the game. Miranda finished with the game-high of 22 points followed by Bryant with 17; each player hit five shots beyond the arc. Miranda also earned the only double-double of the game leading with ten assists. Kerr and Glanville led the Aggies in scoring with 13 points each and Asad finished with 12.
Chandler Bryer and
Sita Sesay led from the bench with eight points apiece and two three-pointer each. The Patriots were strong on the boards outmatching the Aggies 43-24 in rebounds. DBU's Brayden Harris led the game on nine total rebounds; Sesay led the Aggies with six.
Coach
Jerry Olson liked his team's effort for the most part but felt they struggled in the second half saying, "I didn't think we cared about guarding during the last 3-4 minutes of the game; we did a horrible job finishing out." The Aggies head coach gave credit to their opponents adding, "They really defended us well and kept us out of the lane. Although part of that came because we started settling for threes." He continued, "Five free throw attempts is pathetic and shows we weren't very aggressive, but I was also disappointed in some of the big calls when the game was tight. That's frustrating to see when your kids are working so hard."
The Aggies look to improve on their 5-15 record and find a win within the conference as they play host to two Heartland teams this week. Thursday Panhandle will take on UA-Fort Smith at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday brings Rogers State for a 3 p.m. tipoff. The Aggie women's team opens each of those dates with matchups at 5:30 and one.
