Box Score 2 Goodwell, Okla.—After two sluggish first half performances, the Panhandle State men's and women's basketball teams could not overcome their opponents, despite improved second-half play by both teams. The Newman Jets claimed final victory over the Aggie women 73-58 and took down the men's team by a score of 105-66.
The women trailed 46-19 at halftime, only able to muster four points in a rough first period against the Jets. The Aggies came out battling after halftime, winning period three 18-14 and period four 21-13. Each team averaged under 40 percent in shooting with Newman leading at 37.7 percent and Panhandle averaging 31. 7 from the field. The Aggies were solid at the line going 5-12 in free throw attempts, but struggled from long distance landing just 3-12 three-point shots. Both were strong at the boards, but the Jets dominated with 53 total rebounds to Panhandle's 46.
Key performers for Panhandle were
Hannah Whitaker and
Johlicia Williams who contributed on both sides of the court. Whitaker and Williams each earned game-highs in rebounds with nine boards apiece; Whitaker shared the game-high in scoring with Newman's Natalia Hausmann, each putting up 16 points in the game. Williams totaled 14 points and combined with Whitaker for five blocks and two steals. Other offering strong support were
Addison Munsch, who added 13 points and have five rebounds for the Aggies, and
Taylor Acosta who totaled 11 points on the day.
Monti Regier led the game in assists offering five for Panhandle and teammate
Shaletha Mayberry finished with three assists and two steals.
Now sitting 1-20 on the season and 0-13 in conference play, the Aggies' head coach
Charles Terry said this after the game, "Again, I am very proud of how we keep battling but, our scoring woes continue. I do feel that we have improved a lot over the last several games."
Also slow to get started, the Aggie men trailed by 33 points at the break (56-23) and were shooting 24.2 percent in the first half. Newman was consistent throughout averaging 47 percent throughout the game; the Jets were unstoppable beyond the arc, landing ten three-pointers in each half. The Aggies went 1-14 from three-point range in the first half and connected on 4-17 three-point shots in the second half to average 16 percent for the game. Newman had the edge at the boards outrebounding Panhandle 51-47.
Tevin Lytes held the game-high in scoring with 19 points for Panhandle; Lytes played well in all facets taking six rebounds and one steal and offering four assists in the game.
Sita Sesay and
Jace Kerr put up 16 and 15 points respectively, followed by
Riyadh Asad who totaled 11 points for the Aggies. Sesay was responsible for two of the Aggies' five three-point shots, with Kerr and Asad accounting for one each;
Jake Regier hit one three for the Aggies as well. From the bench
Jaedon Whitfield led the team in rebounds with eight; Lytes totaled six boards followed by Sesay and Kerr who had five rebounds each. Newman's leader at the boards was Kevin Bryant who held the game-high with 12 rebounds. Christian DeYoung and Daniel Nwosu led their team with 18 points apiece, and Taylor Schieber had a game-high of five assists for the Jets.
Head Coach
Jerry Olson was disappointed in his team's efforts saying, "We played with little to zero energy and it seems we just have no interest in playing defense right now. We're going to have a hard time if we don't start giving better effort." On a positive note Olson gave credit to their opponent adding, "Newman was really good." The coach also offered, "Tevin (Lytes) was good at times."
The men's team falls to 5-18 overall with a 0-14 record within the Heartland Conference. The Aggies will compete on the road this week with the men starting out at Dallas Baptist on Thursday, Feb. 16 for a 7 p.m. tipoff; both teams then take on Lubbock Christian on Saturday, Feb. 18 with the women's game starting at 1 p.m. and the men following at three. Panhandle State Basketball will return to the Oscar Williams Field House for Winter Homecoming on Thursday, Feb. 23 with games against Texas A&M International starting at 5:30 p.m.
