Box Score 4 Moore, Okla.—Panhandle State Baseball added their first two wins of the season in a weekend round robin tournament with Randall University and York College (Neb.).
Senior pitcher Sam Beattie got the Aggies off to a great start on Friday with a shutout win over Randall 7-0. Beattie held the Saints to just two hits over his eight innings on the mound; the lefty launched 14 strikeouts and only allowed one walk on his watch.
Logan Litton came in in the eighth to close out the game and struck out two of three batters faced.
The Aggies notched one run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by
Chris Schaer.
Juan Rubayo led off with a triple in the sixth to kick off a four-run inning for the Aggies; a sac fly, two errors and a single by
Joseph Cerda sent runners home. The ninth inning saw the final two runs come through for Panhandle as Cerda scored on a wild pitch followed up with an RBI single by Robert Rodriguez.
Game two on Friday had Tristen Hubler starting on the mound for the Aggies. Hubler dropped his second loss of the season in 3.2 innings with seven hits and five runs against York College. The Panthers put up four runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead early on. They would score one run in the top of the fifth and hold the Aggies scoreless through the bottom of the sixth.
Austin Beckner opened up with a double to right center and later scored on an RBI single by
Jake Bowman to give the Aggies their first run of the game. Bowman then scored the first of two runs for Panhandle in the eighth; RBI singles from Cerda and Schaer pushed through the runs bridging the gap to a 6-3 deficit. York scored their final run of the game on a wild pitch in the ninth, and a double play dashed the Aggies' hopes for a comeback leaving the score at 7-3.
York got the best of Panhandle again in Saturday's first bout, claiming a 12-4 victory over the Aggies.
Adrian Lopez was the Aggies' starting pitcher and Lopez left a 3-3 tied ballgame after 4.2 innings, turning the mound over to freshman
Corey Ley in the bottom of the fifth. Ley would be given the loss, allowing four earned runs over two innings. The Panthers totaled three runs in the first, one in the sixth, seven in the seventh and one in the ninth. Panhandle brought in two runs in the third and one each in the fourth and sixth innings. A homerun by Cerda opened up scoring for the Aggies in the third inning, and an RBI double by Rodriguez was good for run number two. A sac fly by Schaer and an RBI single by Rubayo scored the other two runs for the Aggies.
Panhandle put up a second win against Randall in Saturday's game two. The 7-3 victory gave pitcher
Dallas Guerrero his first win of the season. Guerrero pitched seven innings and struck out five batters; his two runs were both unearned. Randall scored runs in the first, second and eighth innings, totaling six hits in the game. The Aggies evened the score with two runs in the second on a fielder's choice by
Brendan O'Flynn and a sac fly by Bowman. O'Flynn went on to hit an RBI single in the fourth and scored on an error after stealing second base; the other two runs to score in the fourth were also unearned. Another error by York led to the final run for Panhandle in the eighth.
Schaer led the Aggies in hitting with a .538 batting average over the four-game series; the freshman went seven of 13 at the plate and totaled three RBI. Cerda led the team in RBI with four and batted .450 for the weekend. As a team the Aggies totaled 41 hits, including three doubles, one triple and one homer. Their opponents held a .268 batting average. Panhandle's pitchers combined for a 2.83 ERA and 11 earned runs. From the field the Aggies committed 13 errors, while their opponents combined for nine. The team now holds a 2-4 record on the season.
Head Coach
Jason Miner sees improvement with each game played saying, "It was good to get the first wins of the year. Beattie threw great on Friday and the whole pitching staff did pretty well over the weekend. We gave up too many unearned runs, but that is something that can and will be fixed. If we can keep hitting the ball like we did, and pitching like we did, we will be fine."
The Aggies continue a road stint this week traveling to Fort Hays State for a single game on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. This weekend the team takes on West Texas A&M in a three-game series Feb. 17-18; Friday's single game starts at 6 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. Live coverage is available for games at opsuaggies.com on the Baseball schedule page.
