Aggies Lose Out in Lubbock

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Lubbock, Texas—Both Aggie Basketball teams took losses against Lubbock Christian in Saturday's Heartland Conference doubleheader. The women fell by 40 points (100-60) and the men were taken by 26 (92-66).

The Lady Chaps dominated throughout the entire matchup averaging over 54 percent in shooting for the game. LCU beat the Aggies at the boards 46-29 and added 54 points on long-distance shots, landing 18-29 beyond the arc for a 62 percent three-point average. Panhandle shot at 28.8 percent from the field and went 3-14 at three-point range for a 21.4 percent average beyond the arc. With a prominent presence from their non-starters, the Lady Chaps outscored the Aggies 42-17 in bench points and did a great job sharing the ball with 25 assists.

Johlicia Williams and Taylor Acosta were the leading scorers for Panhandle State, totaling 14 and 13 points respectively; Acosta nine points off three-point shots, landing the Aggies' only threes of the game. Williams also led the team at the boards with six rebounds, sharing the game-high with LCU's Tess Bruffey and Maddi Chilsey, who finished with six boards apiece. Bruffey also held the game-highs in scoring and blocks, putting up 18 points and eight blocked shots on the day. Delaney Gaddis led the game in assists, serving out eight for the Lady Chaps. The Panhandle women's team owns a 1-21 overall record, and Lubbock Christian moved to 15-10 for the season and now sits third in the league with a 10-4 record within the conference.

The Aggie men were down by 21 points at the break (49-28) and continued to trail throughout the second half. LCU averaged over 60 percent in first-half shooting and, while the Aggies improved to 58 percent in the second half and matched the Chaps beyond the arc, they were unable to pull out from the first-half slump. Turnovers proved to be an obstacle that Panhandle could not overcome, as the Aggies gave away 24 points off 19 turnovers for the game. The Chaps earned half of their points inside, outscoring the Aggies 50-24 in the paint.

Freshman Chandler Bryer led the Aggies in scoring with 13 points, alongside senior Tevin Lytes who also put up 13 points in Saturday's performance. Bryer also had four assists and four rebounds in the game. Lytes and freshman Jaedon Whitfield were the team's leaders at the boards bringing down five rebounds each. Game highs went to LCU as Marcos Schuster and Brennen Fowler led in scoring with 16 points each, and Fowler totaled seven rebounds as well to lead the game. With the loss, the Aggie men now sit 5-20 on the season and LCU added win number 16 and rank third in the Heartland with a 10-6 conference record.

Panhandle State basketball hosts two final matches this week with both offering live stats and free video streaming through KKBS. The Aggies celebrate Winter Homecoming on Thursday, Feb. 23 with two conference games against Texas A&M-International. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. with homecoming royalty crowned directly afterwards, the men's game will follow at about 7:30 p.m.
