Box Score 3 Goodwell, Okla.—The Aggies went 1-2 against Colorado Christian in a weekend series, being defeated 7-1 and 8-6 in Friday's doubleheader, and taking a 7-6 victory in game three on Saturday.
Off to a slow start in game one, the Aggies only managed one run in the bottom of the second inning; an RBI single by
Chris Schraer that brought in
Juan Rubayo who reached base on a big triple to right-center. The Cougars gained two runs in the second, one in the fourth and four in the fifth of a seven-inning matchup. Panhandle's starting pitcher
Samuel Beattie took the loss in 4.2 innings allowing six hits and three earned runs.
The Aggies bounced back with a strong showing in game two, bringing three runners home in the first inning.
Nate Kelly led off with a single and advanced to second on a nice sac-bunt by
Joseph Cerda; Kelly then touched third on a balk with one out. A two-run homer by Robert Rodriguez was followed up by a double from
Dehryen Noriega and an RBI single by
Juan Rubayo to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead going into the second inning. With
Adrian Lopez starting on the mound for Panhandle the Cougars battled back with three runs in the second to tie the game. Lopez took the loss as Colorado Christian added two more runs in the top of the third to pull ahead.
Pitchers
Dallas Guerrero,
Josh Casillas,
Hunter Hand and
Tiler Fletcher each saw action for the Aggies, with Guerrero allowing one run in the fourth and Casillas giving up two in the fifth. The Aggies trailed 8-3 until Kelly got things going with another leadoff hit to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Back to back balks brought Kelly to third base and a single from Cerda scored Panhandle's fourth run of the day. Senior B. J. Henry sent Cerda home for run number five and later scored the Aggie's final run on an error by second base.
Game three got off to another strong start for the Aggies with three runs scored in the first inning. A double by Rodriguez was good for one RBI, along with a single from Schraer, which scored the second run of the day; centerfielder
Derek Stallworth walked with two outs and bases loaded, bringing in run number three.
Tristan Hubler kept the Cougars quiet from the mound through the second inning. An Aggie error in the third helped push one runner through for the Cougars in the top of the third, but Panhandle responded at the plate, bringing in two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Quinn O'Neill hit a two-run single to left-center to pull the Aggies ahead 5-1.
A good eye by Schraer led to an RBI in the fourth as the Aggie batter walked with bases loaded. Hubler gave up three hits that led to three runs for the Cougars in top of the fifth before being replaced by
Zane Grigsby with two outs in the sixth. An empty sixth inning held the score at 6-4 with the Aggies in the lead, until CCU tied the ballgame at 6-6 scoring one run in the seventh and one in the eighth. With runners in scoring position, Noriega drove a double to left-center in the bottom of the eighth to bring in the winning run for Panhandle State. Grigsby gave up two hits in the ninth, but the Aggie defense left both runners on base to claim their third win of the season.
On the series, the Aggies totaled 24 hits led by
Chris Schraer and Robert Rodriguez who brought in three RBI each. Sophomore
Juan Rubayo had five hits for seven total bases and a .636 slugging percentage over the three-game stint. Panhandle hitters racked up extra bases with three doubles, one triple and one homer in the series. The Cougars finished with 31 total hits including six doubles and one triple.
