Aggie Women take it Down to the Wire

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Goodwell, Okla.—The Rogers State Hillcats took home two wins Saturday afternoon after out-playing the Aggie men's team 86-41, and making a second-half comeback against the Aggie women to notch a two-point victory 59-57.

The Panhandle State women's basketball team owned the first half of the game and held a six-point lead (32-26) going into the break. Taylor Acosta had ten points at the half and the Aggies had outscored the Hillcats 18-6 in the paint. After halftime, Aggie shooting dropped from 52.3 percent in the first half to 34.5 percent in the final two periods. Rogers State improved from 35.4 percent to 41.9 percent in second-half shooting. A sluggish third period saw the Aggies outscored 18-11, while a strong 14-point fourth quarter effort was not enough to take the game.

Acosta was a big-time force for the Aggies totaling 13 points, three steals and three assists in the game. Hannah Whitaker and Addison Munsch each added ten points for the Aggies and Johlicia Williams and Shaletha Mayberry put up eight points apiece. Mayberry landed the only three-point shot for Panhandle who averaged a paltry 12.5 percent beyond the arc (1-8); RSU hit seven threes in the game for a 38.9 percent three-point shooting average. The Hillcats leading scorers were Rachel Block and Nikola Nedoroscikova with 14 and 13 points respectively. Williams led the Aggies at the boards with nine total rebounds, and RSU's Lauren Schuldt held the game-high with ten rebounds. Schuldt also led the game in blocks with two.

The Aggies' head coach Charles Terry said, "We have done much better as a while and I am extremely proud of our efforts. We just need to have some success on the win side now." The Aggie women now hold a 1-19 record on the season.

The Aggie men's team struggled from the start against Rogers State, lagging by 29 points at halftime (45-16). Averaging 26.1 percent from the field and 14.3 percent at three-point range, the Aggies were also behind at the boards 29-11 after the first twenty minutes of play. Twelve turnovers in the first half also helped add 18 points for the Hillcats. While second-half shooting improved to 40 percent and rebounds rose to 14, giving the Aggies an advantage at the boards, Rogers State came back with energy shooting 62 percent from the field and adding 12 points on four long-distance shots.

For the game Rogers outscored the Aggies 42-2 from the bench and 27-7 in points off turnovers. Although the Aggies trailed 20-8 in the paint during the first half, Tevin Lytes offered assistance inside in the second half with three dunks and a layup. Lytes ended as the game's leading scorer with 20 points; Sita Sesay was the only other Aggie to score in double-digits totaling ten points. RSU's leaders were Jeylyn Sharpe (14 points) and JD Tisdale (12 points). Lytes and Sesay also led the Aggies at the boards with six rebounds apiece; Kyler Ng held the game-high in rebounds with eight for Rogers State.

Dropping to a 5-17 record after the loss, Coach Jerry Olson was not pleased with his teams' efforts saying, "We were really bad. We had no energy and Rogers State just really outworked us. That's what they do, they play defense and play with a lot of energy." While Olson was disappointed in the overall effort, he acknowledged the performance of Lytes stating, "Tevin played hard."

Aggie Basketball will be back on court this weekend with two home contests against Heartland Conference opponent Newman. Saturday's Pink Out games will begin at 1 p.m. with the women followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
