Tucson Tournament Highlighted by 8-1 Win Over Dickinson State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 Tucson, Ariz.—Panhandle State baseball spent a Spring Break weekend competing in the Tucson Invitational Tournament and came away with a win on the final day of the meet.

Starting off with tough matchups on Saturday, the Aggies took a 1-9 loss to Malone and a 0-10 loss against Northern State. Sunday's doubleheader with St. Cloud State saw the Aggies fall 2-14 and 1-11. The team enjoyed a day of fun on Monday and then went back to work with a two-game series against Dickinson State.

Game one gave Panhandle pitcher Josh Casillas his first win of the season. The senior pitched a complete game, holding Dickinson to five hits and one earned run over the seven-inning matchup. Casillas kept the Blue Hawks scoreless through the third inning and through seven strikeouts in the contest.

The Aggies heated up at the plate, bringing in four runs in the fourth inning. Chris Schraer started off with a single and, after one out, the following five Aggie batters were walked sending in three RBI on free bases. A sac bunt by Chris Casias sent in the fourth runner to give the Aggies a 4-0 lead. The Blue Hawks one run came in the bottom of the fourth, but Panhandle answered with another run in the top of the fifth, a single by Robert Rodriguez. Three runs in the sixth sealed the victory as Dehryen Noriega led off with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single by Joseph Cerda. Another double scored two runs for the Aggies off the bat of Juan Rubayo.  The victory brought the Aggies to five wins on the season. Dickinson came back to claim a win in game two by a score of 8-4.

For the tournament the Aggies totaled 39 hits led by Joseph Cerda who averaged .636 with seven hits over 11 at bats. From the bullpen pitchers Jeraid Gaskin, Adrian Lopez, Samuel Beattie and Tristen Hubler each took losses. Panhandle State baseball will compete at home this weekend in a Heartland Conference opener against Newman University. The Aggies will host a doubleheader against the Jets on Friday, March 17 starting at Noon, and a single game on Saturday which will be Military Appreciation Day; Saturday's matchup also begins at Noon. The team will play again on Monday, March 20 in a doubleheader against Southern Nazarene.
