Box Score 3 Fort Smith, Ark.—Panhandle State played a three-game series against the University of Arkansas Fort Smith over the weekend and fell in all three contests by scores of 3-0, 7-4 and 7-1.
A delayed start due to incoming weather held Friday's doubleheader off until Saturday. The seven-inning game one proved to be a standoff on the mound as the Lions' starter Hayden Harvey got away with a no-hitter to earn his third win of the season. Senior
Samuel Beattie held the loss for Panhandle, but threw a solid six innings surrendering just six hits and one earned run. Beattie retired six batters by strikeout and walked only three over the 27 batters faced. The Lions scored one run in the third on a triple and RBI single; and put up two runs in the fourth inning on fielder's choice plays.
The Aggies got off to a great start in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning. An infield error put the first runner on base, backed up by a single from
Chris Schraer.
B.J. Henry stepped up with a two-run single and later scored on a double by
Dehryen Noriega that brought in two runs for the Aggies. UAFS opened scoring with three runs in the bottom of the inning and took two more in the second to edge a 5-4 lead. Panhandles starting pitcher
Adrian Lopez stayed in through the third inning and took the loss with five earned runs on seven hits, including two triples and one double; Lopez threw four strikeouts during his time on the mound.
Tristan Hubler relieved Lopez in the fourth and lasted 3.0 innings, allowing one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Closing out the seventh and eighth for the Aggies was senior
Logan Litton who held the Lions to two hits and zero runs. Middle reliever Nolan McCutcheon got the win for UAFS in 3.0 innings of work with one hit and four strikeouts to his credit; Clayton Whelchel earned a save finishing out the final 2.1 innings of the game.
Sunday's series finale brought senior
Josh Casillas to the mound for Panhandle. Casillas threw three hitless innings before giving up two hits and one run in the bottom of the fourth. The Aggies allowed zero hits in the fifth before giving up one run in the sixth on an RBI triple. It was a 2-1 game after sac fly by
Joseph Cerda gave the Aggies a run in the top of the seventh, but the Lions added five runs in the bottom half to gain a 7-1 advantage. Three pitchers came in for Panhandle in the seventh inning with
Dallas Guerrero,
Jonny Mireles and
Jerald Gaskin each seeing time on the mound.
Michael Mendoza and
Hunter Hand finished out the eighth, but Casillas took the loss in game three.
For the weekend, the Aggies totaled 12 hits and five errors over the three-game stint, and held a team batting average of .143. The Lions averaged .315 in hitting totaling 28 hits with ten going for extra bases. Panhandle State baseball will compete at home this week, continuing Heartland Conference play against Rogers State March 31-April 1.
