Senior Day Ends in Walk-off Fashion for Aggies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Goodwell, Okla.—The Panhandle State baseball team added two Heartland Conference wins this week as they took on Texas A&M International in their final home series of the season.

Games originally schedule for Friday and Saturday, moved to Thursday/Friday due to impending weather. The Aggies took a 1-0 win in game one to split Thursday's doubleheader with the Dustdevils, who claimed game two by a score of 10-7. On Friday, senior athletes were recognized prior to and exciting game three that saw the Aggies take a walk-off win 5-4.

Lefty Samuel Beattie got a great senior send-off, pitching a complete game in the series finale on Friday. After a rough start in the first inning that brought four runs in for TAMIU on a grand slam homerun, Beattie settled in and allowed no more than one hit per inning for the remainder of the game. Panhandle's defense was solid throughout with great plays at the plate and in the outfield. Senior catcher B.J. Henry denied two stolen bases with fast action to second baseman Joseph Cerda; Henry also got in on a double play exchange from third to first. Cerda was also a quick draw on a double play from shortstop to first base.

The Aggies narrowed the gap in the bottom of the first in game three as leadoff hitter Joseph Cerda walked. Left fielder Chris Schraer then reached base and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher on a ground ball. Cerda scored on an RBI single by Nate Kelly with bases loaded, and a third walked batter, the Aggies' designated hitter Brendan O'Flynn, pushed Schraer through for run number two. Panhandle added one run in the bottom of the third inning when Henry crossed home on a single by first baseman Robert Rodriguez. The score stayed put at 4-3 through the top of the ninth when the tension mounted as the Dustdevils led off with a double to left field and advanced the runner to third on a sacrifice hit. Beattie struck out the third batter and threw a groundout to first base for what would be his final pitch of the game.

The Dustdevils brought in their third pitcher of the day, Nick Perales, in the bottom of the ninth. Perales opened with a ground ball to Nate Kelly for the first out. O'Flynn hit a single to put the tying runner on base, and then freshman right fielder Jake Bowman stepped up to smash a homer over left field for the walk-off win in the Aggies' last home game of the year. Beattie got his second win of the season with nine hits over nine innings with nine strikeouts thrown.

Thursday's game one also showed strong pitching and great defensive play by the Aggies. Josh Casillas went the distance in the seven-inning matchup with TAMIU and gave up only four hits and one base on balls. The only run of the game came off the bat of Nate Kelly who hit an RBI single to score B.J. Henry in the fourth inning; Henry drove a double down the left line to reach base. Casillas earned his second win of the season over the Dustdevils starter Devon Torres.

In game two the Aggies fell behind by six runs as they entered the fifth inning; TAMIU scored two in the first and four in the third inning, leaving Panhandles starting pitcher Adrian Lopez with the loss. Tiler Fletcher and Joseph Cerda each batted in runs in the bottom of the fifth inning; Fletcher on an error by the pitcher and Cerda on a double to left field. With senior Tirstan Hubler on the mound, the Dustdevils were held scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings. Hubler allowed one run in the top of the sixth, but a great double play by the Aggie defense (543) held the score at 7-2 going into the seventh.

Dallas Guerrero took over on the mound in the seventh inning and threw two strikeouts and a pop-up, leaving two TAMIU runners on base. The Aggies rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh with the help of two wild pitches and an infield error. A stolen base by Schraer scored Cerda from third and a single from Kelly brought Schraer home for run two; Brendan O'Flynn hit a two-run single to edge the Aggies within one run 7-6 going into the eighth inning. The Dustdevils opened up with a homer in the eighth, adding one more run, and then put up two more in the ninth as senior Logan Litton came in to close for Guerrero. Panhandle put tying runners on base in the bottom of the inning and scored one run on a sac-fly by Bowman on two outs. A strikeout on the following at bat left two runners stranded and ended the game in regulation.

The Aggies totaled 20 hits over the three-game stint with three errors on the series. Five hits went for extra bases off four doubles and a two-run homer. TAMIU combined for 25 hits including two doubles and four home runs; the Dustdevils were charged with four errors in the series. Panhandle's two wins over Texas A&M International this week marked the second Heartland Conference series win for the Aggies since 2010; those wins also came in Goodwell against TAMIU.

The Aggies complete their season on the road this week with a conference series in Austin against St. Edward's University May 5-6. Friday's doubleheader is set for a 1:30 p.m. start time and game three on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aggie fans can keep up with these games via live stats and video links at opsuaggies.com.
