Double-Double for Munsch Makes for Sweet Victory at Langston

Langston, Okla.—The Panhandle State basketball teams took on their first SAC road contests of the season Thursday evening with two matchups at Langston University. The Aggie women clinched a 74-63 victory over the Lions, while the men's team was defeated 87-70 by a No. 6 nationally-ranked Langston team.

Junior guard Addison Munsch marked a double-double for the Aggie women, tying her career-high of 31 points and posting a game-high of ten rebounds on the night. Naomi Rodriguez also offered up double-digit numbers with 11 points off the bench. Seniors Taylor Acosta and Monti Regier tallied nine points apiece, with Regier striking all nine off shots made from beyond the arc. Post Nadia Hayes brought down six boards for the Aggies, followed by Acosta and Shambri Kelso who finished with five rebounds each in the game.

The Aggie women actually trailed by eight points (19-11) after the first period, where they landed only 33 percent of their shots from the field, and just 1-of-4 from three-point range. The team bounced back in the second period with a 53 percent shooting average to outscore their opponents 24-14 and gain a two-point favor heading into halftime (35-33). Langston kept things close, edging within one point in the third (16-15); but the Aggies put up another 24-14 effort in the fourth and came away with a clear-cut victory to claim their second conference win of the season and move to 6-3 overall.

Head Coach Victor Esparza was pleased with the win stating, "We came out flat which got us down 12-0, but we never dropped our heads and we battled back." Esparza added, "We were able to grind it out on defense and got some stops." Of Munsch's performance, Coach Esparza expressed, "Addison had a huge game for us and carried us throughout. We made some big-time plays in the fourth quarter and we refused to get beat." He concluded by commenting, "I'm proud of our effort, of getting the win on the road and finding a way to get it done. I'm especially proud of how our defense played, we really clamped down and made some things tough for them. I'm excited for the girls; they deserve it."

The Aggie men posted 35 points in each half, and trailed by nine at the break (44-35). Breiman Alexander and DK Sumo led the team in scoring, tallying game-highs of 23 and 18 points respectively against the top-ranked team in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Alexander also notched his second double-double of the season with team-high of ten rebounds. Thomas Ellis, Alan Hodge and Baris Ulker each added seven points apiece for Panhandle; Ulker brought down nine boards and Ellis offered up a game-high of six assists.

Langston added 24 points off Aggie turnovers and 18 points on fast breaks. For the game, the Aggies averaged 38 percent in shooting and hit on 7-of-29 shots from three-point territory and 7-of-9 at the line. The Lions landed just three shots beyond the arc and averaged 47 percent from the field for the game. With the loss, the Aggies own a 6-3 record on the season and sit 1-2 in conference play.

Remaining optimistic, Head Coach Aaron Coombs offered comments, "We did a lot of good things and I'm proud of how we battled and how we competed. If we compete like that every night, we are going to win a lot of games." Coombs continued, "Ultimately we didn't play smart enough to win a conference road game, and that is my fault."

Aggie basketball remains on the road this weekend with another SAC meeting In McPherson, Kan. The two teams take on Central Christian College on Saturday, Dec. 15 starting with the women's game at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4. Both games will offer live stats and video streaming links which are available online at opsuaggies.com. Panhandle State basketball will return to Anchor D Arena after the Christmas break for SAC games on Jan. 3 against Texas Wesleyan and Jan. 5 versus Southwestern Assemblies of God.
