Goodwell, Okla.— Panhandle Baseball gained a pivotal victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday (Feb. 26) in a 6-5 win down to the last inning.
The Greyhounds got two runs on the board early in the top of the 1
st, leaving the Aggies wary as ENMU's Perez pitched a shutout through six innings, leaving five Aggies stranded on the bases through to the seventh. The Greyhounds added another three in the top of the 7
th, taking a five-run lead on the home team, but the bottom of the frame would yield the beginning of a comeback for the blue and red.
Three consecutive bases on balls lead off the bottom of the inning, as
Chris Galvan,
Jaylon Burnett and
Jack Aydelotte took first, second, and third respectively.
Luis Dermas entered to pinch run for Galvan, and a single by
Bradley Ruiz over second base allowed Dermas to quickly cross the plate.
JJ Vaught stepped up with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt, bringing Burnett home before the end of the inning and edging the Aggies closer to the Greyhounds, 2-5.
On the bump,
Charlie Marini took the Greyhounds three up three down in the top of the 8
th.
Juan Sanchez lead off the bottom of the frame, singling through the left side gap.
Aaron Moreno would come in to pinch run, and subsequently stole his way to third.
Jared Mayeda took first base on a walk, as Tony Frye took his place to pinch run, and stole second on the next pitch. Galvan stepped into the box and roped a single to left field, scoring Moreno, and another hard hit from Burnett brought Frye across the plate. Outfielder Jake Dean would bring in the tying run, as a double to center scored Burnett and evened the score, 5-5.
The top of the 9
th had Aggie Field on the edge of their seats as a bases-loaded situation incurred, but Marini worked mechanically to strike out batter number four and popped up the next two to end the top of the frame and strand all three Greyhounds.
Vaught lead off the bottom of the 9
th with a single to second and ran it out down the line to earn first base.
Gerson Padilla stepped in with a bunt and reached on an error by ENMU's catcher, the same allowed Vaught to take second. A passed ball gave both runners another bag, and
Luis Rodriguez worked the count to earn first base on a walk. With bases loaded, senior first baseman Mayeda stepped to the box and- in an 0-2 count and to a roar of Aggie fans- slapped a hard hit down the left field line to score Vaught and walk off the game to take the win, 6-5.
Marini would earn the win, and Panhandle would best ENMU for the second time in the two teams' playing history after the Aggies took a victory over the Greyhounds last year, 8-6.
With this win, the Aggies are currently 9-7 on the season and are coming off a three-game streak as they head into their first conference outing. They will hit the road to Muskogee, Okla. to take on Bacone College over the weekend (Mar. 1/2).
