GRUVER, Texas— After inclement weather in Goodwell forced Panhandle State to move their games to Gruver HS Field in Texas, the Aggies (17-12) capped off their weekend with a series sweep of Central Christian (Kan.), taking a Game 1 victory on Saturday, 13-10, and two on Sunday in a shutout in Game 2, 8-0 and a walk-off win, 6-5 for Game 3.
Jaylon Burnett opened up the scoring in Game 1 with a 3-RBI homer in the second and the Aggies held the 3-0 lead through four with Joey Goetze on the mound. They caught some defensive trouble in the fifth with a 2RBI single from the Tigers and a bases loaded walk tied the score, 3-3, but a 3-RBI homerun by Louis Rodriguez put the Aggies up by another three in the bottom of the frame, 6-3.
Blake Tucker would come in for the Aggies, giving up two Tigers runs in top of the sixth, but the Aggies answered back in the bottom of the inning with a sac-fly from
Jacob Dean and an RBI single from
Payton Rhodes, and kept the momentum going through the bottom of the seventh with a 2-RBI double from
Kasey Leatherwood, an RBI groundout from Burnett and another RBI single from Rhodes to take the Aggies up, 12-5. The Tigers began to claw their way back in the eighth, plating three runs, including a 2-RBI homer, but the Aggies added another in the bottom off a single from Mayeda to take the score 13-8. The Tigers battled, tacking on two more runs in the top of the ninth in a last effort, but Tucker and the defense were able to close out the game 13-10.
In Game 2, Dean got the Aggies on the board in the second with a 3-RBI homerun and a 2-RBI homer from Leatherwood followed in the third. The fourth yielded a long single to right field from Rodriguez to plate another two runs, and Moreno crossed home plate on a hard hit single from Mayeda to score the Aggies' eighth and final run of the game.
Yesiel Valdez posted the shutout through six innings, allowing five hits and zero runs, and striking out eight Tigers.
Nicholas Virdo came in to close the seventh, keeping the Tigers at bay and striking out two of his own in the inning to give the Aggies the 8-0 victory.
With
Corey Ley on the mound, Central Christian took the lead for the first time in the series on Game 3, plating four unanswered runs in the first four innings.
Tyler Bryant came in in relief, and he and the defense took the Tigers three up-three down in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, a fielder's choice resulted in Dean reaching first, and Burnett earned a base on balls, putting a runner in scoring position for the Aggies. Rhodes stepped up and roped a single through the right side, scoring both runners and getting the Aggies on the board, 4-2. A nice double play from Vaught and Mayeda followed by a popped up foul to Rodriguez kept the Tigers back in the top of the sixth.
Gerson Padilla stepped in to pinch hit in the bottom of the frame and lead off with a single;
Bradley Ruiz would come in to pinch run, and a triple from Dean sent him across home plate. Burnett followed with a sac fly to plate Dean and give the Aggies the tying run, 4-4. After back to back walks,
Charlie Marini came to the mound with no outs and two runners on, and an error from short would allow one run in the top of the seventh, putting the Tigers back in the lead, 5-4. With the pressure on in the bottom of the inning, Rhodes reached first on an error by the Tigers, and would advance to scoring position as CCC intentionally walked Rodriguez.
Aaron Moreno, who is tied for the lead in runs scored for the Aggies, would come in to pinch run. A groundout from Mayeda advanced the runners to second and third, and
Chris Galvan would step up with base hit to score both runners, aided by an untimely error from the Tigers, to take the walk-off win, 6-5.
After this series sweep, the Aggies are now 8-4 in conference, and will head off for another conference match up next weekend, as they take on the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma for a three game series in Chickasha over Mar. 29-30.
