Goodwell, Okla. - Sophomore firstbaseman
Kayli Grove's bat, along with some stellar pitching, led the Oklahoma Panhandle State University softball team to a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference wins over Bacone College at Aggie Softball Field. The Aggies (27-19, 18-16 SAC) topped the Warriors (2-32, 1-29 SAC) by scores of 9-1 and 8-0, both shortened to five innings by the run rule.
Grove was an offensive juggernaut with the bat. Grove went a combined 4-for-6 in the pair of wins, all extra-base hits. She had a pair of doubles in game one and then added a triple and homerun in the second game.
Grove scored four runs and drove in five. She was also errorless in 10 total chances in the field.
And while Grove handled the offense, the Aggies dynamic duo of pitchers
Kaylor Battiest and
Lindsay Jacobs effectively choked off the Warriors' bats. In game one, Battiest improved to 14-10 on the year, striking out nine – pushing her over 150 "K's" for the season (155) - and walking just three in her 5.0 innings of work. She permitted just two hits and one unearned run.
Jacobs, a senior playing her final home games this weekend, spun a masterpiece, as well. Jacobs matched Battiest by allowing just two hits to BC, both by the Warriors' Hannah Wolf. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter in her 5.0 frames, improving her record to 12-6 in 2019.
The Aggies banged out a combined 21 hits in the two games, 12 in the first game alone.
In game one,
Abby Gregory went a perfect 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in two runs.
Chrislyn Dovers was 2-for-2 with a run and a walk.
Jena Konieczka was 2-for-3, driving in two runs and scoring one.
Sophomore
Jewell Lee – who was honored in a pre-game ceremony for her selection as an All-American in 2018 – was 1-for-1. But that hit was a three-run triple in the Aggies' five-run second inning and she also lifted a sacrifice fly in the third.
The second game saw two other Panhandle State players produce multi-hit efforts. Designated player
Brittany Thomas was 2-for-3, with a double and an RBI.
Karah Ortiz was also 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving in another. Konieczka slapped a triple i9n the contest, as well.
The Aggies and Warriors will clash again on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader in the regular season finale. Jacobs will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
