GOODWELL, Okla.— Panhandle State Baseball capped off their regular season with a series win over Mid-American Christian University over Friday and Saturday. The Aggies split day one with the Evangels, winning game one 7-2 before falling 6-2 in the afternoon cap, but the Aggies came back with a momentous 13-9 game three victory on Saturday to win the series overall.
Mid-America got on the board early in game one on Friday, putting up two runs in the first inning, but Panhandle answered back with three runs of their own. A line drive single by
Luis Rodriguez coupled with an error on the Evangels right fielder plated two, and a subsequent single from
Jared Mayeda brought in pinch runner
Aaron Moreno to regain the lead. The next four innings remained scoreless for both teams, until the Aggies broke open the bottom of the sixth.
Kasey Leatherwood sent a missile triple to left center to plate Moreno, and
Chris Galvan sent a single up the middle to bring Leatherwood in from third.
Jaylon Burnett followed suit with a triple of his own to bring in pinch runner
Luis Dermas.
Bradley Ruiz earned a walk to first and
JJ Vaught kept the pattern going with a roped triple to right field to bring Ruiz across the plate. The Aggies closed out the sixth 7-2 and kept the Evangels at bay through the top of the seventh to take the victory.
Yesiel Valdez earned the win by pitching the complete game, doling out seven strikeouts, allowing just two hits and two runs, just one earned.
In Friday's afternoon game two, MACU plated a run in the top of the first, but Panhandle tied it up in the bottom of the frame as
Payton Rhodes doubled to left field, advanced to third on a single from
Gerson Padilla and then crossed home plate on a passed ball. In the top of the third, a balk from
Nicholas Virdo walked in the Evangels' go-ahead run from third, and another two runs came across the plate in the fourth to further their advantage, 4-1.
Jeremy Norris would enter in the fifth with runners at the corners, and back-to-back singles from the Evangels continued their lead 6-1. A sac-fly by
Juan Sanchez in the sixth gave the Aggies another run, but they would be unable to make a comeback, giving away the game two win, 6-2 to the Evangels with Virdo taking the loss.
The two teams met again on Saturday for game three in what would become a high-energy, high-scoring rubber match. Both went scoreless through the first before MACU put up a home run in the second to get on the board. The Evangels' Pichardo sent another ball over the right field fence in the third to bring in two more runs. The Aggies intentionally walk a runner to load the bases hoping for the easy force-out, but the Evangels took advantage, plating another two runs to take the lead 6-0 before the ill-fated inning was over. But, the Aggies would not be down for long as they put up an incredible five-run rally in the bottom of the frame. Rodriguez sent a 2RBI double up the middle and a roped single from Mayeda sent the speedy Moreno home from second. With two outs, Vaught stepped up to keep the inning going, sending a double to left center and Mayeda across the plate. Vaught would advance to third on the attempted throw home from the Evangels, and would come in to score on a wild pitch, making it a one-run game, 6-5.
Charlie Marini exited the bullpen to relieve starter Joey Goetze, but back-to-back homers from the Evangels warranted a switch to lefty
Garrison Armstrong. With one out, Armstrong worked out of the inning to limit the damage. In the bottom of the inning, Rhodes sent his own homer over the right field fence to keep the Aggies within fighting distance of the Evangel lead and an RBI single from Rodriguez added another run in the fifth to once again make it a one-run game. The Aggies got their second wind the following inning, sending in six runs off five hits. A 2RBI double from Jake Dean started off the rally, and with two outs, a 2RBI homer from Sanchez followed by a 2RBI homer from Rodriguez pulled the Aggies ahead, 13-8. MACU would add another run in the eighth, but they would not be able to close the gap and the Aggies would take the victory.
Saturday's game celebrated Senior Day for nine of the student-athletes on the field, as outfielders
Payton Rhodes, Jake Dean and Tony Frye, first baseman
Jared Mayeda, infielder
Juan Sanchez, third baseman
Kasey Leatherwood, and pitchers
Corey Ley,
Jeremy Norris and
Lukas Holub were able to finish off their final regular season game with the Aggies with a win.
On the series, Rhodes went 7-12 at the plate with four runs, an RBI, a double and home run to his name. Rodriguez was 6-11, bringing in seven RBI and tallying one run, a double and homerun as well. Vaught was 5-11 with 2RBI, one run and a double, and Burnett went 4-7 with an RBI and a triple. Sanchez was 4-7 with a run, 3RBI, a triple and a homerun, and was just a double shy of the cycle on Saturday.
The Aggies capped off their regular season with a 20-25 record and are 11-16 in conference play, putting them at seventh in the SAC rankings. They will face the two-seed No. 9 Oklahoma City University Stars in the first game of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday in Oklahoma City.
