Oklahoma City, Okla. – The Panhandle State University softball team closed the books on the 2019 season in memorable fashion by run-ruling Langston University, 10-1, in its final pool play game at the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament. The Aggies finished the year with a record of 30-21 overall, the first OPSU softball team in school history to end a season at .500 or above.
Panhandle had a winning percentage of .588 and was just the second Aggies' team to ever hit 30 victories. The 2003 team had a school-record 34 wins (34-35). OPSU also participated in a conference tournament for the second-consecutive season, after going more than a decade without any playoff action prior to 2018.
Saturday's win was also the swan song for senior pitcher
Lindsay Jacobs as an Aggie, the lone senior on the roster. Jacobs (14-7) threw the complete game, allowing five hits and posting four shutout frames before the Lady Lions scored their run. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter in putting the exclamation point on her two years in the Panhandle colors.
For her OPSU career, Jacobs racked up 21 victories (21-20) in 54 appearances in the circle. She had 17 complete games and threw 244.0 innings, pilling up 146 strikeouts of opponent batters.
On Saturday, Jacobs got plenty of run support from her teammates, as Panhandle State scored all of its runs in the first two innings (two in the first and eight in the second). OPSU had eight hits – all singles - and showed patience by drawing six walks.
Leadoff hitter
Abby Gregory was 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. She also scored twice. Gregory was the lone Aggie with multiple hits in the abbreviated contest.
Firstbaseman
Kayli Grove was 1-for-1 with a pair of runs scored. She walked and drove in one, as well.
Jaylinn Reyes,
Jena Konieczka,
Haley Neal,
Chrislyn Dovers and
Karah Ortiz all had hits for the Aggies. Gregory, Grove and Reyes each had a stolen base, as well.
OPSU got all the runs it would need in the first inning. Gregory opened the game with a per4fect bunt single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, eventually scoring on Reyes' RBI single through the left side. With Grove on third, Panhandle ran a delayed double steal with Reyes swiping second and then Grove stealing home to make it 2-0 as the Aggies took control the rest of the game behind Jacobs' arm to register win No. 30.
