GOODWELL, Okla. - A quartet of Oklahoma Panhandle State University women's basketball players – led by forward
Cassia McCaskill - reached double figures in an 86-54 non-conference home win over Bacone College at Anchor D Arena.
Panhandle State (5-13) and the Lady Warriors played a close opening quarter, as OPSU held BC in single digits, 15-9. However, the Aggies began to create some distance in the second, out-scoring Bacone by a 26-11 count, and giving the hosts a 41-20 halftime cushion.
OPSU maintained its 21-point lead through three quarters, 56-35. In the fourth period, the Aggies stepped on the accelerator, 30-19, to close the contest.
McCaskill, a native of Townsville, Australia, had a "good 'ay" for OPSU in all regards. McCaskill had a game – and season – high scoring game with 23 points. McCaskill hit a blistering 10-for-16 from the floor, narrowly missing a double-double by hauling in nine rebounds, as well. She also dished off for two assists and topped all players with three steals.
"(Cassia) played really well," OPSU Head Coach
Victor Esparza said post-game. "She's starting to get back to her old self after being out for a month-and-a-half or so. I'm really proud of her. She really attacks the basket and that's big time for us."
Panhandle continued its torrid shooting from beyond the three-point line. OPSU poured in nine treys, compared to three by the Lady Warriors. Junior guard
Shaylynn Choate – whose 10 field goals in the previous three games had all been from beyond the arc – added four more versus the Lady Warriors and proved she was mortal by tallying a fifth field goal of the two-point variety. Choate finished with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Freshman
Shay Audrain was close behind with 13 points, making good on 5-of-14 from the floor. Audrain had a pair of three-balls to her credit. She also chipped in three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Aggies' fourth double–figure scorer was post player
Nadia Hayes, finishing with 10 points. Hayes had a perfect night shooting, going 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Hayes also had eight boards on her ledger in the OPSU win.
Laura Moya Demures and
Kaylee Morgan each passed off for four assists. Moya Demures matched McCaskill with three steals. McCaskill and
Lowendie Laporal each had a blocked shot on the defensive end of the floor.
The victory also snapped an eight-game skid by the Aggie team.
"We needed that win big time," Esparza said. "Just for morale and confidence going into the rest of the conference season. I'm proud of our team. They played hard and just did the little things right."
