Aggies fall in football home opener, 28-13

GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University's football team scored first in its home opener, but Arizona Christian University ended up scoring the most, in a 28-13 setback at Anchor D Stadium. The loss dropped the Aggies to 0-3, while the Firestorm is 1-0.

The OPSU faithful were treated to a big play that broke a scoreless tie midway through the first quarter. At the 5:33 mark, Panhandle State quarterback Shawn Cumby – on a third-and-10 play – uncorked an 80-yard pass-and-run to Jaishone Brown up the far sideline. Matthew Lopez made good on the extra point attempt, making the lead 7-0.

Panhandle State would maintain that cushion the remainder of the first quarter and through a scoreless second stanza, carrying the lead into the halftime locker room.

However, as the teams came out for the second half, the Firestorm had the hot hand and scored 28 unanswered points; 14 each in the third and fourth quarters.

The Aggies' final tally of the day came as the clock expired, capping a 61-yard drive. On the 11th play of the series, reserve quarterback KC Crandall hit a diving Aaron Henry on the 17-yard TD strike.

Cumby was 14-of-28 for 150 yards and Crandall 8-for-16 for 56 yards.

Brown had 99 receiving yards on five catches. Teammate Seth Barbarino had nine catches for 69 yards.

On defense, OPSU's Warren Dillon led all tacklers with eight (six of which were solo). Ja'Quavion Daniels had five tackles.

The Aggies will return to action on October 31, when the team travels to Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas.
