GOODWELL, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State University baseball team gave Tabor College – which received votes in the latest NAIA poll – a tough battle, but eventually came up short in the three-game series split between Woodward and Enid, Okla. In Saturday's doubleheader in Woodward, the Aggies (6-11) lost 7-6 in extra innings and then fell 9-2 in the nightcap, before dropping a 4-2 decision in Enid on Sunday.
Saturday's opener was an exciting bout to begin the series, featuring four ties and four lead changes in the game.
Junior shortstop
Markus Bracey had a big game, going 3-for-5, with a double and a triple. Bracey drove in two runs and scored once.
Catcher
Luis Rodriguez finished the game going 2-for-2 with a walk. Secondbaseman
JJ Vaught was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Senior
Chris Schraer's (1-5, RBI) double was OPSU only other extra-base hit.
In game two on Saturday, the Aggie offense could not get anything going until the final frame and Tabor up, 9-0. Bracey (1-4) and Vaught (2-2, double) each drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Jonathon Applebury was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the loss.
In the Sunday series finale,
Joseph Goetze absorbed the loss, going 5.0 innings and charged with four earned runs. The Blue Jays did not get to Goetze until the third and fourth innings, scoring twice in each.
Rodriguez (2-4) and Schraer (2-3) each drove in a run. Rodriguez had a double and Schraer a sacrificed fly.
Bracey's hot bat was at it again, going 2-for-5 with a double and run scored.
Derek Stallworth has a 2-for-4 day.
After Sunday's setback, Panhandle Head Coach
Shawn Joy saw some good things from his team. "We played a very good game," Joy said. "We hit a lot of balls hard, pitched very well and played good defense. They made one or two more plays than we did."
