GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University baseball dropped a 13-1 decision to Wayland Baptist University – which received consideration in the latest NAIA poll – in a Sooner Athletic Contest at Aggie Field. The loss dropped the Aggies to 10-16 overall and 3-4 in the SAC, while the Pioneers improved to 23-7 and 6-1 in the SAC.
The game will be the last for both teams for an undetermined amount of time, as the SAC suspended all games and practices for its 11 sports due to the Coronavirus concerns on Thursday evening.
The Panhandle squad was limited to one hit by the WBU pitching staff. The Pioneers' LJ Diaz went 7.0 innings and gave up one unearned run. Chase Jones tossed the final two innings.
Jose Santiago had the Aggies lone hit with a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh.
OPSU got its lone run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth. Shortstop
Markus Bracey drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved over to third on a fly out by
Chris Schraer. Jonathon Applebury hit a grounder to first and the throw to try to get Bracey at the plate was off line, making it 2-1.
"We fought hard for six innings against a god team," OPSU Head Coach
Shawn Joy said. "Too many mistakes hurt us in the end."
Joseph Goetze took the loss for the Aggies. Goetze threw 5.2 innings, allowing four runs and just two earned. He allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked six. Goetze was not helped by the OPSU defense, which had five errors in the game.
