WINFIELD, Kan. - Oklahoma Panhandle State men's basketball team hit the road this weekend to face the Southwestern College Moundbuilders to continue their non-conference game slate. The Aggies would fall to the Moundbuilders to a score of 78-64.
The Aggies struggled somewhat offensively on the day, with only
DK Sumo,
Justin Pile, and
Jalen Thomas reaching double-digits in points. The team would also work with turning the ball over in the game with a total of twenty turnovers. The Aggies looked to continue their momentum on Friday after getting their first win over Randall University late last month. However, the Aggies could not find a rhythm offensively to which stout Moundbuilder defense took advantage.
The Moundbuilder offense prevented the Aggies from ever coming to close in points throughout the game. However, this would not stop the Aggies from battling for every point. In a game in which the bench would score 31 points to the starters 33 points. The home team was relentless on defense which further hindered the Aggie offense while simultaneously bolstering their offense.
By the end of the game, the Aggies would finish with a 44% field goal percentage, 27% 3-pt percentage while going 12-18 from the line. In addition, the Aggies only managed 4 assists in the matchup, highlighting a need for some more effective ball movement on offense. Yet, their strength in the game came from their points in the paint (30) and total rebounds (34).
On the game Head Coach
Mark Laird would say, "We did many good things defensively to really disrupt their offensive rhythm. They were averaging 97ppg & we held them to 78. But we didn't play well offensively. SC is a very solid team that was picked to finish 4th in the KCAC...so this is a good measurement for where we are rt now. This was a lot like a SAC road game in that regard. We will need to move and share the ball better against our next few opponents in order to start winning games like these."
The Aggies continue on the road as they take on Barclay College Tuesday, November 9th, for another non-conference match before they begin their conference slate against Mid-America Christian at home on November 18th.
