GOODWELL, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State Men's soccer team hosted Southwestern Christian University Eagles, the first round of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC). The game was full of action. Each team held each other to a 1 to 1 score through regulation time and in double overtime. Thus, resulting in a draw for the Aggies & Eagles, forcing the game to penalty kicks to advancements in the tournament. Southwestern Christian University Eagles were able to score 5-4 to the Aggies in penalty kicks.
As usual, the Aggie offense would be more aggressive out of the gates leading to an early goal. This time from a penalty kick from
Yannis Sapim. The offense for the rest of the first half would stall somewhat as neither team could push far into the opponent's side of the field and find the back of the net. Towards the close of the half, the Eagles would tie the game up at one apiece.Â
The second half of the match started a little more chippy than the previous half. Finishing with a total of seven cautions in the half. The Aggie defense took a stand in the second half as the Eagles found themselves more comfortable in Aggie territory. The Eagles would get off four shots in the half, each saved by Aggie goalies
Javier Torres and
Hugo Dutour. The end of regulation would close with both teams scoring a single goal.
The Aggies headed into overtime, looking to push the ball into the Eagle's territory in an effort to score a goal and close out the game. However, they were unable to bypass the Eagle's defense and get many shots off. For the Eagles, it was quite the same as they were unable to sneak any shots past Dutour in either overtime. As a result, the match would head into a shootout as neither team could get a goal in either overtime.Â
Head Coach
Brandon Misuraca stated, "I am incredibly proud of our player's ability to fight the entire game. Looking at where we have been and where we are going, while it's a hard pill to swallow at the moment. I am pleased with the team, and now we wait to see if we get an At-Large bid.Â
The Aggies would send out
Mathieu Beauvain,
Ludwig Scherer,
Yannis Sapim,
Tayze Ellington, and
Cheslon Carollisen for their portion of the shootout. Beavain would be the first to get one across for the Aggies in which the Eagles quickly answered. Scherer would shoot second and have his shot rebound off the crossbar of the goal allowing for the Eagles to take the lead. Sapim, Ellington, and Carollisen would each make their shots, leaving the match in the hands of goalie
Hugo Dutour. However, Dutour was just out of the reach of the Eagle's last shot of the night. Thus, the Eagles advance to the second round of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament on penalty kicks.
