GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State University men's basketball was unable to pull off an upset of Sooner Athletic Conference frontrunner Southwestern Assemblies of God University, falling at home by a score of 97-80. The Aggies (4-6, 3-6 SAC) never led versus the league-leading Lions (7-1, 6-1 SAC).
Panhandle was unable to counter a balanced SAGU offense that had no less than six individuals in double-figure scoring.
The Aggies received another outstanding effort from freshman
Jalen Thomas. The Amarillo-native poured in 30 points – his second 30-point game in the past three outings and eighth double-digit scoring game of his fantastic first college season – by draining 12-of-16 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws. He also led OPSU with six assists and four steals.
Jamaal Smith connected on 8-of-14 tries from the floor, on his way to a 16-point game. Smith also topped Panhandle with seven rebounds coming off the OPSU bench.
Senior guard
DK Sumo IV was the team's only other player to register double-figure points, with 11.
Garrett Richardson contributed eight points and four rebounds to the Aggie coffers, while
Alfred Alkannama and
Quentin Fankhouser booked six and five points, respectively. Two points each from
Jalen Williams and
Coltyn Semmel rounded out the OPSU scoring.
Panhandle State will look to stop its two-game slide on Thursday (Feb. 11) at Southwestern Christian University in Bethany.
