BATESVILLE, Ark. - Senior wide receiver
Seth Barbarino's 11-yard touchdown reception with 27 seconds left in the game proved to be the difference, as Oklahoma Panhandle State University rallied to defeat Lyon College in a Sooner Athletic Conference road game at Pioneer Stadium. The Aggies improved to 2-7 with the win over the Scots.
Â
The game featured lead changes in the last five scores on the game by both teams.
Â
After a scoreless first quarter, Lyon built a 10-0 lead within the first four minutes of the second stanza. Panhandle State finally got on the board with 5:56 left in the second on
KC Crandall's one-yard quarterback keeper. Crandall capped a 13-play, 81 yards drive that chewed six minutes off the game clock.
Lorenzo Amador's kick made the deficit 10-7.
Â
That score stood until halftime.
Â
The Aggies' first possession of the third quarter was another elongated series, going 14 plays and 72 yards, all while having 6:09 elapsing on the game clock. Senior
George Dominguez burst into the end zone on the three-yard run that, despite a missed PAT, gave the Aggies the 13-10 advantage.
Â
But the Scots regained the lead with a touchdown of their own a minute later, 17-13.
Â
OPSU's penchant for the long, sustained drives carried over to the fourth quarter. At the 13:08 mark, Aggie runningback
Jamalrian Jones not only crossed the goal line on a four-yard dive, but also converted on a two-point conversion run to put OPSU back on top, 21-17.
Â
The Aggies looked in control, driving into Lyon country on their next possession. But Crandall was intercepted at the Scots' eight with 10:10 on the clock. The hosts would drive the 92 yards and score with 2:42 left to play, leading 24-21.
Â
After recovering Lyon's on-side kick at the hosts' 42, Panhandle State began its winning drive. The biggest play may have come from the feet of Jared Perdue, who rambled for six yards on a do-or-die, fourth-and-three situation to keep the set alive.
Â
That paved the way for the Crandall-to-Barbarino TD connection three plays later.
Â
Crandall led the Aggies' offense, completing 22-of-33 passes for 243 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Crqandall also ran for 25 yards and a TD.
Â
Emile Cola was the largest benefactor of Crandall's aerials, making 15 receptions for 178 yards. Barbarino had four grabs for 41 yards.
Â
On the ground Jones carried 26 times for 154 yards and the one score. Perdue had 16 rushes for 97 yards.
Â
Defensively, linebacker
Kameron Dickerson had 15 tackles, nine solo. He had a pair of sacks, as well, to lead the Aggie defense.
Â
Defensive back
D'Quan Charles produced double-figure tackles, as well, with 12 stops (seen solo). Charles also registered a sack and one pass break-up.
Â
As a team, OPSU held a commanding 520-to-264 yard advantage in total offense. The Aggies had 30 total first downs.
