OPSU Volleyball season ends with five-set loss in SAC quarterfinals

PLAINVIEW, Texas – The curtain came down on what was one of the most memorable seasons in Oklahoma Panhandle State University volleyball history, after a 3-2 loss to Wayland Baptist University in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals. The Aggies lost to the Pioneers by set scores of 21-25, 26-28, 26-24, 25-19, 12-15.

While OPSU reached the SAC tourney for the third-consecutive season, the Aggies were the No-6 seed this year, after previously twice entering the event as the eighth seed. Panhandle also won a set for the first time in its SAC tournament participation versus the No.-3 seeded WBU squad. OPSU finished the shortened year with 10-7 record, the first Aggie volleyball team to earn double-digit wins since 1980.

After dropping the first two sets to WBU, OPSU rallied behind a furious attack, led by Ana Pimenta and Essence West. The duo each registered match-leading totals of 20 kills, apiece. Pimenta hit .260 and had three blocks, to go along with six digs.

West had a .286 attack average and had a team-leading 21 digs on defense. She also had a pair of blocks.

Middle blocker Ebony Dykes topped the Aggies with seven blocks. Dykes also had seven kills in 18 attempts for a .389 attack average.

The OPSU setter tandem of Lesly Galarza and Celenia Toribio had 37 and 17 set assists, respectively. Galarza had 15 digs and Toribio added four blocks. Each had four kills.

Sydnee Saunders booked nine kills, seen digs and two blocks in a nice all-around effort.

As a team, Panhandle out-hit the Pioneers by a .201-to-.171 margin.
