Thomas scores 31 as Aggies fall to the Pioneers

PLAINVIEW, Tx - The Aggies set their sights on the second half of their conference slate as they head down to Plainview, Texas to face the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers. The Aggies would not be able to maintain their lead throughout the match and end the night with a loss and final score of 61-90. Jalen Thomas would score his season-high of 31 points against the Pioneers extending his double-digit scoring streak to seven games. Accompanied by seven rebounds and a single assist.

On the game Head Coach Mark Laird would comment, "They were just tougher than us tonight. They were +22 on the glass and had 22 offensive rebounds. Combine that w lack of finishing at the rim and there's no amount of defense that can overcome that. We have to get things sorted and get ready for another tough SAC opponent on Thursday."

The Aggies (7-9, 4-7 SAC) came into the game looking to establish a strong press against the Pioneers (8-10, 4-7 SAC). Applying pressure early in an effort to generate turnovers and keep possession on their side of the court as much as possible. Coming out to a great start with back-to-back made shots from Jalen Thomas. The Aggies would make five of their first seven shots in the game before the Pioneers would have to call a timeout and rethink their game strategy.

However, the aggressiveness from the Aggies began to have its consequences as numerous Aggies would get in foul trouble early in the half. Those that would come off the bench would still have their fair share of tough plays down low as well as a few steals. As the half came to a close the Aggies would trail by a single point. The Aggies' foul troubles would come to haunt them as the second half got underway.

While the Aggies seemed to outpace the Pioneers in the first half the second half was a different story. Too many turnovers and missed opportunities on defensive and offensive rebounds led to more second chance points for the Pioneers that the Aggies could not afford. The Pioneers pulled farther and farther away as shots just did not seem to fall the Aggies way on the night. To go with the amount of turnovers in the loss was the Aggies' season low shooting percentage (32%) and season high personal fouls (25). Both allowing the Pioneers extra chances for free points.

The Aggies stay on the road as they head to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on the Southwestern Christian University Eagles Thursday, January 20th at 7:45 PM.
