Aggies Split Conference Opener

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Panhandle State softball split their day one conference opener against the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions. Dropping game one of the day 6-5 and winning game two 10-0.

The Aggies would drop a heartbreaker in game one of the day to the Lions. After leading for nearly the entire game, errors would allow the Lions to score five in the bottom of the sixth. Handcuffing the Aggies in the top half of the seventh and leading to their first conference loss.

Game two of the day provided a rebound opportunity for the Aggies. Doing just that with a run-rule performance. Keeping the Lions to only hits in game two. A strong showing from numerous Aggie hitters would lead the Aggies over the Lions and a split on day one of the series.

Game 1

After a postponed conference opener against the USAO Drovers, the Aggies now opened their conference slate against the SAGU Lions. However, the Aggies would be disappointed in their conference opener as the Lions completed a late-game push to win 6-5.

Aggie ace Sarah Conley would throw all six innings for the Aggies. Accumulating six strikeouts and two earned runs. Earning the loss due to late game errors from her defense. Conley secured her sixth 6+ strikeout performance.

Uncharacteristic offensive struggles hindered the Aggies against the Lions. The Aggies' eight strikeouts and two errors gave the Lions the chance they needed to take over the game. Forcing the Aggies to leave six runners on base as the Lions came from behind and won game one of the series.

Game 2

Looking to prove game one was a fluke the Aggies came out in game two looking to prove that they have earned their record. Recording eleven hits and ten runs with only two strikeouts.

Sophomore pitcher Kenley Yocom (4-3) threw her third complete game of the year against the Lions. Despite only striking out two Lions, Yocom was able to keep the hitters off-balance and rely on her defense to bounce back and make plays for her.

Not only would the defense back up Yocom but also the offense. Totaling eleven hits for ten runs in game two against the Lions. The real highlight comes from the Aggies' eight-run sixth inning. Started off with a single off the bat of senior Kinzie Jones and peaked off a double by Jones as well.,

Seven of the nine Aggie starters would reach base safely in game two of the series against the Southwestern Assemblies of God. Senior Kinzie Jones would lead the team with three hits, while junior Brielee Daniell would lead the team with three RBIs.

Panhandle State softball returns to action Sunday, March 13th at Noon.
