Panhandle State Splits with the Lions

WAXAHACHIE, Texas - Panhandle State softball split their season opener against the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions. Pulling out a strong win in game three 7-3 before dropping the series finale 5-2.

As per usual the Aggies would strike first and refuse to give up the lead. Once again reaching double-digit hits. Three Aggies would record multi-hit games and two would record multi-RBI games. Consistent run production for the team has gotten them to their current 15-6 record.

However, that run production would not carry over to the second game of the day. Scoring two runs in the top of the first inning is all the Aggies could muster in the series finale. Plagued by strikeouts, Aggie softball would be unable to mount a comeback and drop their fourth game against SAGU 5-2.

Game 1

With an impressive record so far this season the Aggies looked to continue said success as they enter conference play. The Aggies would be poised to do so as they dominated the Lions in game three of the series. Putting up easy crooked numbers on the scoreboard and winning 7-3.

Sarah Conley would earn her fourth win of the year and seventh complete game. Although Conley would not strike out her usual amount of batters, she would be effective on the mound in pitching around baserunners. Finishing the win with two earned runs allowed with two strikeouts.

Brielee Daniell would start things off for the Aggies by reaching on an error in the top of the first. Danielle would score on an RBI single from Kinzie Jones later in the first to give the Aggies the early lead. Kaitlyn Lord and Kenzie Monroe would tack on two more for the Aggies to give them a three to nothing lead heading into the second.

The Aggies would not be satisfied with only a three-run lead as freshman Haley Saur would drive her second triple of the season to score two more for the Aggies. Kayli Grove would get in on the action later with a two-RBI single in the fourth to put the Aggies up seven to nothing.

The Lions would attempt a late-game push for the win but would come up short. With exceptional defense from shortstop Kinzie Jones and catcher Kaitlyn Lord, the Aggies would only allow the Lions to score two. Saur, Jones, and Adams would lead the team with two hits each in the win. Grove and Saur would also record two RBI days as well against the Lions.

Game 2

The series finale would not go the way of the Aggies due to too many strikeouts. The Aggies would finish the game with more strikeouts (8) than they would have hits (6). Unable to put the ball in play and get runners on hindered the ability of the middle of the lineup hitters to get the Aggies on the board.

Kenley Yocom would record only her second loss of the season in game four. Going three innings of work for the Aggies and giving up five earned runs with one strikeout.

Rylin Baker would come in to relieve Yocom in the fourth inning. A characteristic outing for Baker as she would finish the last three frames for the Aggies without allowing a single hit.

The Aggie offense would make noise early with a two-run top of the first. Lord would drive a two-RBI single to give the Aggies the lead. However, that would be all the run production the Aggies could muster in the game. Only managing five more hits in the remaining six innings of play. Inopportune strikeouts and poor plate discipline hampered the so far potent Aggie offense.

Panhandle State softball heads back to Goodwell for the first set of home games against the Oklahoma City Stars Tuesday, March 15th at 2 PM
