Aggies Sweep Final Day of Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Oklahoma Panhandle State softball (13-4) competed for the second day in the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic after splitting their games yesterday. The Aggies take the field once again against the McPherson Bulldogs (6-10) as well as the Huston Tillotson Rams (4-8).

The Aggies start the day against the Bulldogs for the third time this season. Winning the first matchup of the season and dropping the second. An evenly matched game for both the Bulldogs and Aggies. McPherson would go up early due to a two-run home run in the top of the first. However, the Aggies would not trail for long as they tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. A back and forth game between the two teams that would end in extra-innings thanks to freshman Haley Saur.

The tournament finale for the Aggies did not disappoint. The offense battled the entire game after going down two to nothing early. Notching ten hits in the contest with three of them being extra-base hits. To account for six runs. The pitching staff only allowed three runs off eleven hits supported by a strong defense.

Game 1

Looking to make up for their last game against the Bulldogs, the Aggies came out ready to play. Refusing to trail for very long after a two-run home run by the Bulldogs. Senior Kayli Grove would drive a triple in the bottom of the first to tie it up for the Aggies. The Aggies would score two more runs in the third innings as the momentum began to swing in their favor.

Sarah Conley (3-2) notched the start for the Aggies. Throwing all eight innings for the Aggies and totaled five strikeouts. Conley pitched around errors to keep the Bulldogs from shortening the Aggies lead. She also got some exceptional help from her centerfielder, Brielee Daniell, as she threw out a runner at home plate to blank the Bulldogs in the second inning.

The Aggie bats continue their tear at the plate early on in the season. Finishing the game with nine hits. Despite leaving a large number of runners on base (10) the Aggies were able to find a way to pull out the win. A large part of their success comes from their timely stolen bases (2) and extra-base hits (2). The Bulldogs would tie it up in the top of the seventh with a solo shot giving the Aggies the chance to walk it off.

The Aggies would go down easy in the bottom of the seventh but would come back with a vengeance in the bottom of the eighth. With Trester starting, the Aggies would look to Saur with two outs in the inning. The Bulldogs would misplay Saur's pop out to shallow right, allowing Trester to score from second for the Aggies' win.

Haley Saur was the highlight of the Aggie win. Going three for five at the plate on the day with a triple and two runs scored. Saur didn't lead the team alone as Grove, Lord, and Jones combined for four RBIs on the day as well.

Game 2

In their tournament finale, the Aggies took the field against the Huston Tillotson Rams. The Aggies looked to finish the tournament on a high note before they head into their first conference series next weekend. They would do just that and more against the Rams. Rallying for hits in the fourth and fifth innings to gain the lead and refuse to give it back. Taking a six to two lead into the last half inning and coming out with the six to three victory.

Kenley Yocom (3-1) would make her eighth consecutive start for the Aggies. The Rams would score two runs off five hits in Yocom's first two innings of work before she would pass the torch to the Aggie bullpen.

Rylin Baker (4-0) would be the first out of the pen for the Aggies. Earning the victory after four innings of work without allowing a single run to score. She would also strike out two Rams in her four innings of work. Conley would come in for the seventh to sit down the Rams to finish the game for the Aggies.

An explosive offense so far this season started slowly against the Rams. Only managing two hits in the first three innings. However, they would flip a switch in the bottom of the fourth. Kayli Grove would lead off the inning with a double and that was all that was needed for the Aggies to get rolling. Followed by six hits in the inning as they went on to score five in the inning and take the lead. They would come back for one more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead. The Rams would attempt a late push in the top of the seventh with a solo home run but Conley would keep the Rams from doing any further damage.

Three Aggies would register multi-hit games against the Rams. Kinzie Jones, Kayli Grove, and Kaitlyn Lord. Each would notch two hits. Combining for six of the ten Aggie hits and three of their six runs. Upperclassmen who look to lead the Aggies for the remainder of the season.

Panhandle State softball returns to the field next weekend, Friday, March 11th for their first conference series against the Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions.
