Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) Men's Basketball team faced a formidable opponent in the #2 ranked Langston University Lions.
In a hard-fought battle, OPSU ultimately fell to Langston University with a final score of 83-40. The first half of the game saw OPSU keeping pace with the Lions, but a crucial basket by Amaree Brown at the 10-minute mark triggered a 10-minute scoring drought for the Aggies. Despite their efforts, OPSU struggled to regain momentum before halftime, with their next bucket coming only 36 seconds before the end of the half.
Langston University demonstrated their depth, with nine players contributing to the scoring effort. They capitalized on OPSU's turnovers, securing 18 points off the Aggies' 10 turnovers. One significant area of dominance for Langston was on the boards, out-rebounding OPSU by a margin of 49-30.
Leading the scoring for OPSU in this challenging matchup was Fred Robinson IV, who contributed 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Amaree Brown provided 7 points, Abdulh Diaby added 6 points, and Ethan Wiley contributed 4 points and 5 rebounds.
Looking ahead, OPSU is determined to bounce back from this setback. The team is gearing up for their upcoming game against Central Christian College on Saturday, January 20th, at 4 PM on their home court.
Head Coach Charles Belt said after the game, "What a gauntlet we just ran through. 4 out of 5 games against ranked opponents and tonight… WOW number 2 in the country and they didn't disappoint. I thought we played extremely hard! I thought our guys left everything they had on the floor. I also told our guys that is what multiple D1 players at the NAIA level looks like up close! With freshmen and sophomores we aren't there yet! Not even close.
The real question for us now is where do we go from here. Do we let playing multiple ranked teams and getting spanked by them kill our spirit and our fight? Or do we keep battling! Best part about having a league this top heavy is we are only 2 games out of 7th & 1 game out of 8th. Our goal was to make the conference tournament in year 1! That goal is still very obtainable! Starts on Saturday!"
