Goodwell, Okla. – The Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies women's basketball team faced a tough matchup at home, falling to the University of North Texas at Dallas, 64-50. Despite a solid defensive effort and balanced scoring, a challenging second quarter proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Aggies held their ground early, finishing the first quarter tied 14-14. However, UNT Dallas surged ahead in the second quarter with a 25-14 run. While the Aggies matched their opponent in the third quarter, scoring 11 points apiece, they struggled to close the gap in the final frame.
"We had an intense practice on Friday to correct our mistakes from the last game," said head coach Wiltzius. "We followed the game plan well, protecting the paint and improving our defense. However, that second quarter hurt us, and it was hard to return from that."
Lyric Carpenter led the Aggies in scoring with 13 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the field and pulling down six rebounds. Molly Jones contributed eight points, including two three-pointers, while Zamari Reece added eight points and two rebounds off the bench. Diana Santos and Mariah Williams provided critical defensive support, with Santos grabbing six rebounds and Williams dishing out two assists.
The Aggies showed improvement on the boards, outrebounding UNT Dallas 43-27, including 16 offensive rebounds. However, shooting struggles hindered their momentum, as the team shot just 29.5% from the field and 12.5% from beyond the arc. With this result, the Aggies drop to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
