Competitive Match Breaks Pioneers’ Way in Second Half

PLAINVIEW, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's soccer team (6-5-5, 2-4-3 SAC) wrapped up its first winning regular season since 2021 with a 1-0 loss at Wayland Baptist (7-5-2, 4-3-2) Tuesday night.

Needing to win or get help from around the conference to secure its spot in the SAC Tournament, though, OPSU fell short and the results did not fall immediately fall its way in the season finale.

The defeat was not for a lack of effort, as the Aggies and Pioneers had nearly identical numbers by match's end, with each team firing 11 shots and making seven saves.

Olai Caicoya made six of those saves for OPSU, shutting out Wayland Baptist until it broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute.

The Aggies had chances late with five shots (three on goal) in a six-minute span between the 73rd and 79th minutes, but they could not convert for the equalizer.

Ayoup Bader led a balanced Panhandle State attack with two shots on goal. He was one of six Aggies who landed a shot on target during the match.

What's up next: OPSU must wait until Friday to see if it will make the SAC Tournament, beginning Nov. 4. All eyes are on the Oct. 31 match between Central Christian and Oklahoma City, with the Aggies needing OCU to win for their season to continue.
