PLAINVIEW, Texas — A free-kick equalizer in the 90th minute by host-Wayland Baptist (4-9-1, 2-6-1 SAC) Tuesday afternoon in the regular season finale stole Oklahoma Panhandle State's chance at a seventh victory on the season, but the 2-2 draw did not cost OPSU (6-6-2, 3-4-2) any ground in the standings.
Tuesday's back-and-forth match saw both teams find their share of luck and misfortune, with the result clinching WBU's ticket into the SAC Tournament and, eventually, solidifying Panhandle State's status as the sixth seed.
Emily Chavez got the scoring started midway through the first half when she took advantage of a strong wind on a corner kick. Kicking from her preferred corner, the right-footed Chavez drew in a beautiful ball that rode a helping breeze all the way into the top back corner of the net for a goal, a highlight that marked the junior's fourth score of the season and 10th point.
With the wind at their backs, the Aggies held an 8-2 advantage in shots 45 minutes into the contest but could not extend their lead by halftime.
As the teams switched sides for the second half, WBU flipped the stats in their favor. The home team then broke through in the 73rd minute to tie the game, 1-1.
With time winding down,
Yaddelis Alderete broke free for a golden opportunity one-on-one versus the Pioneer goalkeeper. Her shot ricocheted off the post directly towards a gliding
Toriana Holt, who scored for the third straight match and sixth time this season.
Holt's goal in the 85th minute tied a program record for most consecutive games with a goal, a feat that was first accomplished by
Emma Daskalov early in 2025 and most recently by
Emma Contreras.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, the goal was not a game winner as WBU netted the late equalizer.
Emma Shockley played all 90 minutes in goal for OPSU, making a career-high 10 saves against the rejuvenated second-half attack of the Pioneers.
Panhandle State saw five players record a shot on goal Tuesday, with
Anne Fernandes,
Emma Contreras and Daskalov joining the goal-scorers.
What's up next: With Nelson University's loss Tuesday, the Aggies retained the sixth seed heading into the SAC Tournament. OPSU is set to play on the road in the SAC Quarterfinals on Nov. 5, when it will face RV Oklahoma City at 7 p.m.
