Aggie Defense Opportunistic in Turnover-Riddled Season Finale

LANGSTON, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State football team (3-7, 2-6 SAC) generated four takeaways but turned it over just as much in a 17-10 loss Saturday afternoon at Langston (3-7, 3-5), concluding the 2025 season.

A near-constant on the year for the Aggies played out again to begin Saturday's "Battle for the Bell," with OPSU forcing a three-and-out before going on a 12-play, 60-yard drive ending in a field goal for Carlos Vazquez.

Panhandle State's passing game was effective on the opening possession, as Chance Guadiz found David Zeller, William Rodriguez III and Justin Lewis for chunk yardage before the drive stalled out and the field-goal unit came on.

OPSU got the ball back right away, as Nate Orta raced across the line of scrimmage to intercept a deflected pass and give the Aggies a short field. Panhandle State drove it inside the Langston two-yard line, but it was stopped on fourth down.

Poor offensive execution plagued both teams throughout the first quarter into the second, but Loren Snead and Jake Morones capitalized with an interception and forced-fumble-plus-recovery. The interception for Snead marked his third of the year, and it brought the star senior to double-digit picks in his career. Morones' forced fumble was the second of his season.

Eventually, a big pass play from the Lions gave the hosts a 7-3 lead prior to halftime.

Punts and turnovers continued to mar the second half, with a late third-quarter field goal giving way to a 10-3 Langston advantage going into the fourth quarter.

The final period started with a spark for the Aggies, and the game was suddenly tied at 10. On the second play of the fourth, JaCobie Johnson grabbed an interception and ran it back 20 yards for the pick-six, tying things up after the extra point.

The Lions drove right down the field for a touchdown answer, however, leaving the Aggies playing from behind at 17-10.

OPSU was unable to get much going on its last pair of possessions, though, and the Aggie defense could not get off the field on Langston's final, game-ending drive.

Guadiz and Tach Brewer both had over 70 passing yards, 67 of which went to Dillon Laurer on five receptions.

Morones and Orta shared a team-high of eight tackles, while Zayden Hoots, Elzie Barnett III and Hector Rodriguez each had one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Rodriguez' tackle-for-loss doubled as a sack.

What's up next: Though OPSU is graduating a large class of seniors, its current freshman and sophomore classes are deep, with many of them already getting valuable playing time. The Aggies will hope for improved health next season as the program turns the page to 2026.
