Late Surge Lifts Aggies Over Mustangs

No Man's Land Classic Information

GOODWELL, Okla. —
The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's basketball team (1-2) rallied from a 70-63 deficit with seven minutes remaining Friday night to pick up its first win of the season, 87-79, over the University of the Southwest (2-1).

Christian Campbell led the charge for the Aggies in the final game of day one of the No Man's Land Classic, draining four treys in the second half en route to a game-high 32 points.

Comeback Time: Trailing by seven, Campbell made a layup, Aaron Williams Jr. drilled a three-pointer and Campbell connected again as the OPSU defense got three straight stops to tie the game, 70-70, with 5:03 to play.

A free throw by USW briefly gave it a one-point lead, but Williams Jr. and Campbell responded with a layup and triple, respectively, to put the Aggies up four, 75-71.

The Mustangs pulled within one point twice in the final three minutes at the free-throw line, but a dagger three-pointer from Campbell – the last of his six made triples on the night – and four clutch free throws from Kensington Grant-Brown sealed the victory.

Back-and-Forth: The margin separating the two teams was in the single digits all game, and the squads finished the night with just 10 turnovers apiece in a competitive, well-played contest.

Southwest held an 8-5 advantage through the first few minutes, but Jacob Taitte was efficient early in helping the Aggies to a 9-0 run and a 14-8 lead seven minutes in. The OPSU lead was stretched to 20-11, its largest of the night, with 11:02 to play in the first half.

USW came back to take a one-point lead into halftime, 35-34, and it appeared to be on its way to continuing its undefeated season after a 12-1 run across three minutes of game time gave it the seven-point lead with seven minutes left.

Headline Performances: Beyond Campbell's 32 points and seven rebounds, Williams Jr. came through in the clutch to close with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Taitte chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Braedon Edison displayed efficiency off the bench, scoring 13 on 6-of-11 accuracy.

As a team, the Aggies lit it up from downtown, converting on 12-of-24 three-point attempts.

What's up next: OPSU concludes the inaugural No Man's Land Classic on Saturday, with a contest versus Northern New Mexico (0-3) scheduled for 5 p.m.
