GOODWELL, Okla. — Amid light showers and cool spring air, the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies softball team split their Friday doubleheader against Sooner Athletic Conference rival Southwestern Christian University. OPSU edged out a back-and-forth Game 1 with a 7-6 win before falling 12-2 in Game 2.
Game 1: OPSU 7, SCU 6
The Aggies came out swinging, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Marin Jacobs lined a two-run single to right field, scoring Kaylynn Du Preez and Trinity Higgins.
In the second, Higgins added to her productive day with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.
Southwestern Christian responded with a four-run third inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles would add another run in the fifth and sixth innings to move ahead 6-5.
But the Aggies showed resilience. Audi Pettaway tied it in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a throwing error. Then, in the seventh, Haeley Vasquez came through with the game-winning RBI single to left field, bringing home Summer Marron for the walk-off.
Jacobs (19-11) went the distance in the circle, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out four in a complete-game effort.
Game 2: SCU 12, OPSU 2
Eagles came out aggressive in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning behind two-run triple RBI contributions from Higgins and a daring steal of home by Halle Zupan to cut it to 6-2 in the second inning; the Eagles exploded for six more runs over the subsequent two frames.
The Aggies were limited to four hits in the second contest. Higgins continued her strong day with an RBI single and a stolen base, while Zupan, Pettaway, and Du Preez each added hits.
