GOODWELL, Okla. — Aggies baseball wrapped up their home series against Nelson University on Monday afternoon, falling 16-4 in the series finale after dropping both ends of Sunday's doubleheader.
The Aggies battled early but couldn't hold off the visiting Lions' big push in the later innings.
Nelson struck first in the top of the first with a solo home run; OPSU quickly answered in the home half as Ryota Kusumoto led off with a single and came around to score on a Devin Lopez RBI single. The Aggies took a 2-1 lead in the second inning behind a sacrifice fly from David Garcia that brought in Andrew Gutierrez.
Braden Greene gave OPSU 5.2 innings of work on the mound, striking out five and holding the Lions to just three runs in the early going. The game stayed tight until the seventh inning when Nelson exploded for six runs and added seven more between the eighth and ninth to pull away late.
Isaac Young and Kusumoto combined for five of the Aggies' nine hits, with Young crossing the plate twice. Alejandro Hernandez added an RBI single in the eighth, while Jackson Somerville reached base with a bunt single and advanced on an error that allowed Young to score in the sixth.
Colby Diduch (2-5) took the loss in relief, and Leandro Tamaki closed out the final three innings.
The Aggies will focus on a matchup this Friday, April 11, on the road against Oklahoma City University. OPSU will face the Stars in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. at Denney Crabaugh Field at Jim Wade Stadium.
