Maldonado Scores in Conference Opener

BETHANY, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State women's soccer team (3-3-0, 0-1-0 SAC) surrendered an early goal and could not come back in a 3-1 defeat at Southwestern Christian (8-0-1, 1-0-0) Saturday afternoon.

The match marked the beginning of Sooner Athletic Conference play, and the unbeaten Eagles wasted little time carrying over momentum from their nonconference season with a goal in the fourth minute.

A defensive battle ensued through the intermission, with the scoreboard still reading 1-0 in favor of the hosts.

The Aggies were the aggressors to open the second half, launching four shots and taking three corner kicks over the first 20 minutes of the period.

OPSU could not tally a goal until after SCU had put the match away with consecutive scores late in the game, however, leading 3-0.

Panhandle State's score came directly following the Eagles' third goal, as defender Celeste Maldonado cashed in on her second goal of the year to bring the final score to 3-1.

Emma Contreras led the Aggies with five shots (two on goal) in the match, as the visitors outshot SCU 11-9 overall.

What's up next: OPSU stays on the road and has a quick turnaround with a Monday afternoon match scheduled at Oklahoma City University (7-0-2, 0-0-1).
