Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Historic Rebounding Effort Spoiled in Double-Overtime Defeat

GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State men's basketball team (3-13, 1-10 SAC) pulled down 65 rebounds for a plus-32 margin on the glass Saturday – the program's highest marks since returning to NAIA competition in 2017 – but it ultimately fell in wild, double-overtime fashion, 83-81 to Southwestern Christian (7-10, 5-7).

On an afternoon filled with twists and turns, it was ruled on the floor that the Aggies had won the game on a tip-in at the first-overtime buzzer by Mykel Lindsey. Replay review showed that Lindsey's bucket came a split second late however, sending the instant classic into a second overtime tied at 72-72.

In the second extra period, the Eagles held a 77-74 advantage midway through, but Lindsey made a pair of free throws and a dunk on the next two OPSU possessions to knot things up at 78.

The teams went back-and-forth at the charity stripe until Aaron Williams Jr. finished in the paint to hand the Aggies a one-point lead, 81-80 with a minute to play. Both squads got a stop on their ensuing possessions, leading to an Eagles inbounds play in front of their bench following a timeout with 10 seconds remaining in double overtime. A technical foul called on OPSU on the inbounds pass sent SCU to the line with imminent possession to follow, and it knocked down one foul shot before scoring the dramatic game winner down low.

Both teams struggled mightily from the floor in the first half as Southwestern Christian led by one at the intermission, 27-26. A 32-18 rebounding edge kept the Aggies in the ballgame despite making just one of 13 shots from beyond the arc through 20 minutes.

While Mike Carter was physical and consistent throughout the night, Ja'Vian Baker, Lindsey and Christian Campbell all started to find their offensive groove in the second half, combining for 25 points as OPSU continued to dominate the boards.

After trailing by six early in the second half, OPSU surged ahead by seven during a stretch that featured a highlight-reel alley-oop dunk from Williams Jr. to Baker and clutch buckets by Lindsey.

The 53-46 Panhandle State advantage with eight minutes to play in regulation soon dissipated, though, with the Eagles reclaiming a four-point edge in the final three minutes. Following clutch free throws by Campbell and a pair of blocks by Carter and Kensington Grant-Brown, Lindsey put the Aggies back up by one on a putback, making it 64-63 in the final minute. SCU then tied it at the free-throw line, and OPSU did not score as the game went to a first overtime.

Helping set up a frenzied overtime finish was Campbell, who buried a three-pointer (just the Aggies' second of the day) to put Panhandle on top, 72-70 with 1:32 left in the overtime period. Eagles' star big man Michal Wooldridge scored a layup with 21 seconds remaining to tie things up, ultimately sending the contest to the hectic second overtime.

Three-point shooting proved to be the difference maker on the night, as the Aggies shot just 2-for-23 compared to SCU's 9-of-22 from deep.

Carter closed with a massive game of 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, all of which are new career highs. Lindsey also set career highs with the Aggies, notching a 19-point, 17-board double-double.

What's up next: OPSU hopes to stop its three-game skid when it takes to the road Monday at 8 p.m. to play Wayland Baptist (13-4, 7-4)
