GOODWELL, Okla. — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (7-7, 0-3 SAC) threatened a late-innings comeback Saturday versus Texas Wesleyan (16-1, 3-0) but could not come through in a 15-7 defeat.
Tough-luck hits that fell in for TWU aided the visitors through the first few frames as the Rams jumped out to an 8-0 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth.
The Aggies countered with a trio of singles from
Genesis Nunez,
Juan Perez and
Devin Lopez, helping to load the bases with one out for
Julian Payan. Payan came through with a two-run double to right, and OPSU cut its deficit in half as Nugyen Culmer and
Alejandro Hernandez recorded RBIs in the inning, making it 8-4.
Both teams plated one in the fifth inning, and Panhandle State had its chance to come back in the sixth following a leadoff double from Payan and a single by Culmer. Hernandez delivered a sacrifice fly and the Aggies would got
Israel Gandara aboard on a walk, but the threat ended with TWU still ahead, 9-6.
Texas Wesleyan put the game away with a five-run ninth inning, though
Zoilo Pimentel homered before the contest was over.
Nunez, Perez, Payan and Hernandez each came through with multi-hit games for the home team, part of 13 base knocks the Aggies recorded on the day.
What's up next: OPSU takes to the road for the first time in nearly a month to open a SAC series at Nelson (11-6, 0-3) on Feb. 27.
