Jacobs Twirls Shutout in SAC-Opening Win; OPSU Falls in Extras in Nightcap

Note: This recap contains an update to Game 2 following the conclusion of the suspended Friday night game, which took place on Saturday morning

GOODWELL, Okla. — Pitcher Marin Jacobs tossed a complete-game shutout in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener Friday as the Oklahoma Panhandle State softball team (3-13, 1-1 SAC) defeated Nelson (8-8, 1-1) 7-0 before a thrilling nightcap was suspended due to darkness with the teams knotted at 7-7 heading into the eighth inning. OPSU ended up falling in the second contest, 10-8 in eight frames.

Game 1: Jacobs (2-4) picked up career win No. 24 in an Aggie uniform as she shut down the Lions to the tune of three strikeouts while surrendering six hits and just one walk in an efficient shutout.

Double plays helped both teams get out of the first inning without allowing a run, as the opposing pitchers worked around scattered baserunners to get through three frames with no score.

After Jacobs worked a perfect fourth inning where no ball got beyond the infield, the Aggies began to string hits together to take control of the contest.

The bottom of the fourth started with a single by Jules Leach, which was shortly followed by a single from Haeley Vasquez. OPSU then got on the board on a double steal that featured a throwing error, and it was not nearly done as Summer Marron drove in a run and Jacobs singled as well.

With two outs, Aaliyah Dang-Gutierrez was gifted a double on a fly ball lost in the sun that brought in Liliana Vaquera and Marron, making it 4-0 through four frames.

The Aggies added on in the fifth, kickstarted by a one-out triple off the bat of Leach. Marron later drove in two runs on a base hit to left field, and Mia Cavallini closed the scoring with a double to left center.

Though Panhandle State was unable to end the game early with a run-rule win, Jacobs worked out of trouble in the final two frames to put the finishing touches on a 7-0 victory.

Game 2: OPSU got on the board first with Gracie Lankford's RBI double in the second inning before Nelson tied it in the top of the fourth with a pair of doubles itself.

Trailing 2-1, the Aggies appeared to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs, aided by two-baggers off the bats of Aracely Arragonez, Lankford and Rylee Hrbacek. Gutierrez also singled before coming around to score following two stolen bases, making it 5-1, OPSU, after four frames.

Nelson answered right back with four runs in the fifth, but Jacobs – on in relief for Jordan Johnson – got out of the jam to keep Panhandle State within one, 6-5.

The Aggies tied it at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth frame on Jacobs' RBI single to center, and neither team could score in the sixth as the contest headed to the seventh still deadlocked.

Both teams scored once in the seventh to send the game to extras, when the contest was suspended due to darkness with resumption of play set for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Stanhope's leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh proved important, as she came around to score the tying run after a pair of errors.

In the eighth inning on Saturday morning, Nelson plated its automatic runner on a single, which was followed by a single and walk. With two outs, the Aggies committed an error that allowed the Lions to score two more runs, and Panhandle State was unable to match that production in the bottom of the inning as it fell, 10-8.
