Note: An updated recap of Friday's suspended game, which was finalized Saturday morning with a 10-8 win for Nelson, is available here.
GOODWELL, Okla. — Junior pitcher
Marin Jacobs capped a remarkable weekend in the circle by spinning a five-inning no-hitter Saturday afternoon in the series finale versus Nelson (9-9, 2-2 SAC), of which Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-14, 2-2) won, 10-0, in five frames.
The 10-0 run-rule victory secured a series split with the Lions after OPSU dropped the middle two games of the slate, including a tight 5-4 defeat in Saturday's first full contest.
Game 1: The Aggies pieced together a one-out rally in the opening frame to jump out to a 2-0 advantage.
Jules Leach reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and
Cassidy Stanhope drove her in with a double for the game's first run.
Haeley Vasquez then notched an RBI single to account for the second run.
Starting pitcher
Jazmin Torres worked her way through two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third. She closed her day with a line of 2.1 innings with seven hits and one run allowed, as
Jordan Johnson relieved her to get out of the third frame with the lead intact, 2-1.
Nelson rallied with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth to climb ahead, 3-2, but OPSU had an answer in its next turn at-bat. Stanhope led off the bottom of the inning with her second double of the day, before Vasquez and
Rylee Hrbacek recorded RBIs on a single and sacrifice fly, respectively.
The score stood at 4-3, Aggies, until the top of the sixth when the Lions plated a pair on two singles and two walks, including scoring the game-winning run on an OPSU defensive miscue.
Johnson closed with a line of 4.1 innings worked with only one earned run allowed.
Game 2: Everything was clicking for Panhandle State as it secured a series split to open conference action in 2026. As the Aggie lineup put up crooked numbers in three separate innings, including grabbing an 8-0 lead through two frames, Jacobs dominated by allowing only two baserunners all game.
The junior right-hander's efforts opened with a looking strikeout going against Nelson's first batter, and it continued all throughout the contest. In the fifth inning with a chance to lock up the shutout and no-hitter, Jacobs induced a pair of pop outs before the contest's final out came on a ground ball to Stanhope, who fired to first in time to complete Jacobs' no-no.
Meanwhile, the highlights for the OPSU offense began early as it opened up a 3-0 first-inning lead on a pair of walks and two singles, with Marron's and
Flora Moreno's base hits driving in the runs.
Then in the second,
Aaliyah Dang-Gutierrez drew a one-out walk to begin a five-run frame. Leach, Marron, Vasquez and
Mia Cavallini did the damage, each tallying RBI singles that made it 8-0.
Following Marron's third base hit of the game in the fourth, Vasquez went deep with a two-run shot to left field to cap the scoring.
Four Aggies recorded multi-hit days in the finale, highlighted by Moreno, Marron and Vasquez also notching multiple RBIs. Cavallini joined the trio with two base knocks.
What's up next: Panhandle State takes to the road March 6-7 when it faces Central Christian College (6-6, 1-3) for a four-game set.
