WAXAHACHIE, Texas — The Oklahoma Panhandle State baseball team (7-10, 0-6 SAC) was defeated 6-2 at Nelson University (15-6, 3-3 SAC) in Saturday's series finale.
Despite the Aggies starting off strong scoring the opening run of the game in the first inning, they were unable to keep that momentum going throughout the rest of the contest.
Panhandle State came out hot with
Fernando Espino scoring the game's first run, as
Neugyen Culmer drove him in on a bases-loaded single. Nelson escaped the jam with the lone run allowed, giving way for starting pitcher
Adam Hinojosa to take the mound.
The Aggies were able to keep the Lions to zero runs scored throughout the first and second innings as the conference foes headed to the third frame with a score of 1-0, OPSU.
Nelson responded in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs by capitalizing on an Aggie error, a single and two doubles. Hinojosa quickly recovered by ending the inning on a strike out, though the damage had been done with the Lions in front, 3-1.
The final run plated for the Aggies came in the top of the ninth again again involving Culmer, as he came in to score on a pinch-hit double off the bat of
Devin Lopez. Unfortunately, the Aggies were unable to find the holes in Nelson's defense to extend the game, falling by a final score of 6-2.
Kage Ralstin was solid in relief for Panhandle State, turning in three innings of work with three strikeouts and one run given up.
What's up next: OPSU looks ahead to next weekend when it will play Oklahoma City University (7-13, 4-2) at home in Goodwell, Oklahoma, with first pitch on Friday set for 12 noon.
