Aggies Erase Double-Digit Deficit, Roll Past JBU Behind Campbell’s 35

GOODWELL, Okla. — Christian Campbell scored a career-high 35 points, Ja'Vian Baker fueled a second-half resurgence with five dimes, and the Oklahoma Panhandle State men's basketball team (4-17, 2-14 SAC) overcame an 11-point deficit to steamroll past John Brown University (9-13, 6-10) on Thursday night, 79-62.

The win simultaneously snapped a seven-game slide overall and a 12-game skid to the Golden Eagles, as OPSU dominated the closing stages of a second half that it ultimately won, 47-23.

Pivotal Stretch: With the game tied at 54 with 8:33 to play following an and-one from JBU's Maliq Sosa, Panhandle State played nearly flawlessly down the stretch to win by 17 points, the largest margin of victory this season.

The 25-8 closing run started with a triple from Campbell, and it continued with back-to back three-pointers from Aaron Williams Jr. and Braedyn Ellison, both of which were assisted by Baker.

Baker then scored himself on a drive in the paint to make it 65-56, OPSU, before Williams Jr. kickstarted a remarkable offensive stretch of four Aggie treys in the next five possessions. Campbell hit on a pair of them, while Kensington-Grant Brown's three-pointer with 1:50 to go gave the Aggies their first double-digit lead of the night.

Encouraged by a raucous crowd, Panhandle State pushed the tempo with under a minute to play, leading to an alley-oop layup from Campbell to Mike Carter that closed the scoring.

How it Happened: OPSU jumped out to an early 8-7 lead on Grant-Brown's first triple of the night, but it soon fell behind 20-10 past the midway point of the first half and, eventually, 25-14.

The Aggies came back to close its deficit to four at 34-30 following a putback from Carter late in the half, but JBU made consecutive baskets to grab a nine-point edge in the last second. A traveling violation on the Golden Eagles gave OPSU a chance to grab momentum with under a second to go, and it did just that when Campbell was fouled on a three-point shot, which made it 39-32, Golden Eagles, at halftime.

In an unbelievable personal feat, Campbell scored the Aggies' first 18 points after halftime, marking a run of 20 straight points for Panhandle State off the shooting stroke of its junior guard. Mykel Lindsey and Carter then connected on jumpers to give OPSU a three-point advantage, 54-51, before JBU tied it back up prior to the Aggie avalanche.

Tip-ins: After getting out-rebounded 23-15 in the first half, the hosts flipped the script with a 23-15 advantage on the glass in the second period. OPSU also had nine of its 13 assists in the second half.

The Aggies knocked down 8-of-11 three-pointers in the second half, leading them to their hottest single-game three-point mark of the year at 57.1% (12-for-21). OPSU shot it 60.7% from the floor overall across the final 20 minutes, while it held JBU to 25.0% shooting during that same period.

Carter was solid all night, scoring 13 with five rebounds and three blocks. Lindsey and Baker tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece.

What's up next: The Aggies play the middle game of their three-game homestand on Saturday at 4 p.m. when they welcome College of the Ozarks (8-15, 5-12) to town.
